6UNDAT MAT 13. 18S3
Flush Immigrants.
It is observed in the east that
there is a marked difference in the
character of the immigration this
year as compared with that of a
few years ago. The number in
creases yearly of immigrants who
bring ready money from the old
country with them. Formerly
some time used to elapse before
immigrants settled down to busi
ness in their respective walks of
life. The drafts then cashed by
the bankers there were for small
amounts, and generally for not
more than enough to carry the im
migrants by rail to the west, with
a few dollars to purchase the bare
necessaries of life for a short time
after reaching their destination.
A great majority of the immigrants
now come well provided with
money, and the bankers who cash
drafts for them state that those not
immediately interested can have
no adequate conception of the ad
ditions to the cash wealth of the
country made by immigration.
Many families which come "with
the intention of settling perma
nently in the United States bring
letters of credit for suras varying
from $100 to $G00, and cases are
not rare in which they bring with
them sums going up into the thou
sands. One "Wall street banker
last week cashed a draft for $1G,
000 for an immigrant who hadsold
out his land in Germany with the
view of engaging in agricultural
pursuits in one of the western
states. The importance of the
movement is reflected in the for
mation of companies in Europe
and in this country for the pur
pose of purchasing large tracts of
western lauds and apportioning
them among foreign settlers at a
comparatively low price.
Aol Good Authority.
Ix a recent article the New
York Sun discussed tho subject
of overwork as far as excessive
mental labor is concerned. "Gen
erally speaking," says the Sun,
"when a man is said to be over
worked, the truth is that he has
been guilty of some excess, which
breaks down his strength. There
may be cases in which there ts an
excess of work, but of these cases
there are very few indeed. The
excess is in eating, in drinking, in
neglect of exercise, or in some
othcrmysterious way. A man of
ordinary health can stand all the
real work that he has to do, but
the additional strain which he puts
upon himself outside of work is
more than he can bear." The
San Jose, Cal. Mercury, acknowl
edging that there is some possi
bility in the Sun's argument, does
not regard that or any other of the
big city dailies as good authority
on that subject, and goes into the
following common sense showing,
the truthfulness of -which will be
acknowledged by the "interior
dailies" fraternitv:
The Sun is a sheet no larger
than the Mercury containing
fnore reading matter, it is true,
butlhere is no man on the Sun
who does one-half the work of the
editor of any o our interior dailies.
The Sun staff includes seven edit
orial writers, besides a small army
of news-gatherers and reporters.
Most of the editorial and reportorial
work of our country dailies is done
by not more than two persons,
with a little extra help in a pinch.
"We write our leaders, superintend
our business and perform many
other duties that the editor of the
great city daily never dreams of.
The management of a big daily is
no doubt enough work for any one
orain, Dut it is eas' work com
pared with that performed by the
average country editor.
u Pointers.
It is hard to please everybocty.
A gentleman recently hanged in
New York found fault with the
rope.
There ought to be a large im
migration into the Coeur d'Alene
country, on the Northern Pacific.
An old chief of that tribe offers
375 ca3ruse ponies to an' white
man who will marry his daughter.
An orthodox divine having said,
"Never 'engage in anything you
wonld not opeu with praver,"
some frivolous person present
asked what he would do with a
dozen oysters.
The lines of railways in the five
divisions of the earth cost, in
round numbers, 610,000,000,000,
and would reach eight times
around the globe. The first steam
railway was opened between Dar-
lincrton and Stockton. Sentember
27, 1S25.
An English syndicate has con
cluded the purchase of five hun
dred leagues of land in the state
of Coahuila, Mexico, for the nomi
nal price often cents an acre, the
whole costing 222,200. The
tract will be devoted to grazing
purposes.
The Nevada and Oregon Kail
road has been restrained from is
suing any more stock. An issue
of 50,000 shares has been declared
null and void, and an order has
been issued preventing the com
pany from making any further
traosfer of stock. This wipes out
5,000,000 worth of stock.
The following advertisement,
with a postoffice address attached,
appeared in a Cincinnati paper.
It is an open invitation to commit
crime:
"0 FOR 20 CENTS. A new
nickel, plated with gold, for 0
cents: a beautiful ornament; no
honest person will pass them for
$5 gold pieces; three for 50 cents,
or eight for SI.
Judge Potter of the Kew York
Supreme Court visited New Or
leans recently and while there was
asked whether Mr. Tilden could
carrv New York. "He can never
-v-r r-r . .. ., i !

"while John Kelly is alive and
Tammany maintains its organiza
tion. John Kelly hates him with
a conscientious and long-enduring
hatred."
Now that Germany has forbid
den the importation of American
pork it is suggested that we pro
hibit the importation of German
manufactures, but such talk about
retaliation is all humbug. These
foreign countries are retaliating
upon us now. Our Tariff virtually
prohibits the importation of many
foreign products. Protection is
the settled policy of the United
States. On what ground, then,
can wc kick, to use the expressive
language of Scripture, when a
foreign power sets up a commer
cial policy that hits us at a vital
point?
Talking of bars the Willamette
I'armcr says that Portland has
been so used to having somebody
shake apples into its lap that it
fails to realize that a crisis has ar
rived. The producers of Oregon
and Washington owe nothing to
its enterprise and liberality, and
care notliing whether their pro
ducts are handled there or else
where. They are unconcerned as
to results, because competition
must benefit them. All the same
it advises the owners of city lots
and those dependent upon country
trade to do something to keep
their tub afloat.
Public land may be taken under
the pre-emption, homestead and
timber culture laws under each of
which 1G0 acres can be taken. A
pre-emption claim calls for a cash
payment of $1.25 to $2.50 per
acre within 33 months after
settlement. Under the home
stead law a title can be secured by
five year's residence and cultiva
tion without any pa' except the
fees of the register and receiver of
the land office. Under the timber
culture act one is required to
plant so many trees annually and
cannot obtain a patent under
eight years. The same person may
obtain 4S0 acres of land, that is
160 under each law.
