brick and sand.
The A. B. Field sails for Tilla
mook from Slain street wharf at six
o'clock this morninsr.
The schooner Sparrow, loaded
with redwood lumber from Eureka,
Cal., is in the stream.
"Two hundred people are taken
in here overy day In tho week."
Seattle Post-Intelligencer.
Services in the Scandinavian lan
guage each Saturday night at 8 o'clock,
in the Methodist church.
Portland printers are goinj
to
picnic June 10th. Down here we
picnic every day in the year.
Last Wednesday the agent at St.
Paul sold the first through ticket to
Portland over the Northern Pacific
Judjje Bonham, of Salem, is in
the city. This is his first visit to
Astoria, though a resident of the state
for thirty years.
R. M. Wooden was in the city
yesterday, and said he was "in after a
dentist to bring him out and pull
every tooth on the Nehalem."
The bark Byevale finishes loading
to-day, and will immediately proceed
up stream. She has been chartered to
load flour, and possibly salmon.
The assessment roll of King coun
ty, W. T., makes a very good show
ing. In 1882, the aggregate was 3,
C85.565; in 1883 it is $8,810,200.
Frank Fabro advertises that he
has an ice depot, and will accommo
date all who wish it at 2& cents a
pound. He also makes excellent- ice
cream.
Capt. John C. White, 1st. Art.,
is in San Francisco. He has been
granted permanent leave of absence,
pending histurn to bo placed on tho
retired list.
Tho First National bank of As
toria will begn operations within
thirty days. An election of officers
takes place next week. I. W. Case
will bo the manager.
There is trouble in tho Portland
post office. W. L. Chittenden, the
deputy postmaster, and the real head
of the concern has resigned, the res
signation to take effect June 1st.
In the case of Chas. Anderson, on
trial in Portland for the murder of
Archie Clarke, tho jury last Thursday
brought in a verdict of "man
slaughter." Anderson will receive
his sentence next Monday.
The Shubrich was coaling at Fla
Tel's wharf yesterday. To-morrow
she goes to tho buoy depot, and will
start on a cruise to the south as far as
Capo Blanco, ieplacing buoys, etc.
Captain Davis will go on a tour of in
spection. Tho Occident and Parker House
are being fixed up in good shapo for
tho season. The Parker Houso is
having considerable addition and im
provement, and is now one of the lar
gest hotels in the northwest, being
50x138 feet, and containing over eighty
rooms.
Tho first Masonic Lodge institu
ted on the Pacific coast was Multno
mah No. 1, at Oregon City, tho
second was "at the Sandwich Islands,
the third at Sacramento, the fourth at
San Francisco, the fifth at Marysville,
and the sixth one was at Sacramento.
Standard.
Delegates and firemen in atten
dance at tho forthcoming meeting of
the Firemen's Association and tourna
ment to be held at Salem will be
granted a reduction of 80 per cent, on
return tickets over the lines of the "H.
P. R. R., the O. R. & N. Co., and
tho P. C. S. S. Co., upon tho presen
tation of certificates signed by the
secretary, stating that they have been
in attendance, otc. Fire apparatus
will bo' returned free on like certifi
cates. An exporter expresses the opin
ion that freights for October and No
vember loading will be 70s per ton in
the Columbia river. That is too high
a figure to give producers much show.
There is already considerable tonnage
in the Columbia river and at San
Francisco, and it will augment before
harvest comes, but the surplus of
forty millions of bushels to be export
ed calls for a great fleet to handle it.
It is not possible to make close calcu
lations on a point 60 iudefinito as crops
three months before harvest, and
ships that havo not pointed this way.
Willamette Farmer.
Tho Columbia Water Company.
D. P. Thompson who has been su
perintending the construction of the Co
lumbia Water Company's works, went
to Portland yesterday. The men aro at
present working at Bear Creek, about
ten mile3 southeast of the city and
about three miles back from tho Col
umbia. At this point the creek or
river debouches into a lake of some
six or eight acres in extent, which
acts as a natural reservoir for the wa
ter. About a mile below the lake the
main pipe, a ten inch tube, will begin.
This source of supply is 412 feet above
sea level. The pipe runs down Bear
creek, through A. C. Fisher's place,
and comes out at Burusido's place,
thence along the shore to Tongue
point, and down the beach to Upper
Astoria, where minor pipe3 will be
laid. From there pipes will be laid
to the reservoirs which are to
be built in the neighborhood of
Cockecomb hill, one of which will be
250 feet above tho city, the other, the
Welch reservoir, enlarged. For the
present the water will come exclusive
ly fromBear creek, tho waters of which
are reported puro and wholesome. As
the city increases in size should this
supply prove inadequate in a few
yeara, Mr. Thompson can lay other
mains from Young's river falls. He
calculates that he can supply a city of
125,000 people with pure sparkling
water, and by the nature of the work
so far demonstrates his faith in our
future. Tho works will be in opera
tion as soon as tho largest number of
men which can be employed to advan
tage can complete them. Consider
able difficulty has been experienced in
getting teams, and material on tho
ground, but this season will assuredly
see Astoria supplied with an abund
ance of pure water.
Asking Some Questions-
En. Asteeiax:
I would mako a suggestion to three
"seaport" towns, Seattle, Tacoma and
Portland.
Did you hear from Mr. Villard at
Walla Walla? Didn't you know be
fore that railroading was not practi
cable from cast of the Cascade moun
tains only through the pass of the
great Columbia river -by way of The
Dalles, Portland, Columbia City,
WestporU Clifton, Knappa and so to
Astoria the seaport of the North
west. Stampede pass, the lowest pass to
Pugot Sound, is not practical for
freight handling. When a railroad
reaches Columbia City by way of
Portland that road is within
CO miles of Astoria. Can you
mako a land lubber believe
that a railroad train can be ferried
across the Columbia river, then 110
miles over rail to Tacoma, then tow
ships 150 miles from the ocean and
that freight can be thus handled
cheaper than by taking CO miles direct
to Astoria without crossing the Col
umbia river and reach deep water at
Astoria's docks that are free from the
ravages of the teredo; where there is
safe anchorage and quick dispatch.
When tho railroad is connected be
tween Corvallis and Junction, and be
tween Roseburg and Redding, and the
Northern Pacific connected, will peo
ple and freight enmc by way of
Union and Central Pacific rail to San
Francisco, then steamer to Portland,
or will they como direct by the
Northern Pacific to eastern Oregon
and Washington and Idaho. The
question is certainty a very easy one.
Gentlemen do you understand?
SOTA BULLWIIACKEU NOW.
The Coming Fourth.
When in tho course of human events
the anniversary of our national inde
pendence approaches, a due regard
for the eternal Gtness of things impels
us to suggest that Astoria celebrate
the coming Fourth of July in a man
ner befiting the occasion. Last year
the Fireman's tournament was the
feature of the occasion. We all had
a good time, everybody went home
satisfied. This year wc know of
nothing except a grand ball and pa
rade of the Knights of Pythias, which
is contemplated. There are several
reasons why Astoria should celebrate
the 107th anniversary of tho nation's
birthday, aud no reason why it should
not. One prominent citizen yester
day, in speaking about it, said: "I'll
put my name down for $50, when
ever tho paper comes round." Let us
celebrate.
Death, of a Pioneer.
Wednesday, about noon, says the
Salem Statesman, P. S. Herren, aged
about fifty-one years, known by old
settlers of this country as "Sim" Her
ren, died suddenly at his brother's
residonco, J. B. Herren. Ho crossed
the plains in tho year 1845, together
with his father's family, comming by
what is known as the "Moek'a cutoff."
Ho leaves a wife and four children,
who are now at Colfax, Washington
Territory for the last fifteen years. At
one time he and his eldest son pub
lished a newspaper at Spokano Falls,
Washington Territory. The fnneral
took place Thursday.
Tho Gen. Galiby is advertised to
make an excursion trip to Fort Canby,
and llwaco, to-morrow.
Delicious Ice Cream at Frank Fa-
bre's.

corner WesMtth and Water streete.
Last Evening's Entertainment.
Liberty Hall was crowded last
evening: and those present en
joyed an intellectual treat Tho en
tertainment began by an overture
"Murmuring of the Forest," per
formed by a quartette, Miss Nellie
Flavel, piano, Prof. A- L. Francis,
violin, D. A. Mcintosh, cornet, Mr.
Neff, bass viol, which was well re
ceived. A recitation "Liquor Traffic"
by Edith May Conn was rendered in
that little lady's inimitable style; and
was followed by a song "Mag
netic Waltz," by Miss Katie Fla
vel whose clear, musical voice gives
evidence of rare vocal talent. In
response to an encore tho singer gave
Comin' through tho Rye." Miss
L. L. Allen's recitation, "An old
story" was warmly applauded, when
the famous "Broom Drill," was given
by twelve young Misses under the
captainship of Miss Worsely. Thoso
who claim that ladies cannot learn
army tactics should havo seen the ease
and dexterity m which those young
ladles handled their favorite household
exercise.
The marching and counter-marching
of these little folks reflected
credit upon themselves and their fair
captain and elicited the continuous
applause of tho audience. Follow
ing are the namo3 of tho divisien:
Agnes Stockton, Annie Callender,
Olga Heilborn, Rosetta Sherman, Zoo
Carruther3, Minnie Warren, Alice
Stockton, Myra Stevens, Ethel
Morrjman, Katy McKean, Alice
Wood, Ella Belcher.
The second part was opened by a
song, "In the meads," well executed
by Mr. Gillig, after which came a
selection from the "Bohemian girl,"
Mrs. Mcintosh, piano; Prof. Francis,
violin; Mr. Mcintosh, cornet; Mr.
Neff bass viol. A feature of this se
lection was the rendering of the obli
gato, "Then you'll remember mo."
The favorite duet "Larboard Watch"
was sung by Mis3 Katie Flavel, and
-Mr. Gillig, and heartily applauded,
after which Miss Dickinson, in a
pleating recitation, answered tho
query "What then?" Following this,
Miss Katie Flavel again favored
tho audience with a song "What
are they to do?" Tho en:er
tainment closed with "Tho Caliph
of Bagdad," Miss Nora Wilson,
piano; Prof. Francis, violin; Mr. Mc
intosh, cornet; Mr. Neff, bass Tiol.
Tho performance was an artistic suc
cess throughout,and fully demonstrated
the fact that Astoria is not wholly
destitute of sufficient talent to pro
duce a fino entertainment, even on
such short notice as this had.
