Temperance
Is not" signing a pledge
or taking a solemn oath that
cannot be kept, because of
the non-removalof the cause
liquor. The way to make
a man temperate is to kill
the desire for those dreadful
artificial stimulants that car

to premature graves, and
desolation, strife and im
happiness into so many
families.

It is a well authenticated

not the case with Brown's

SALICYLICA is known as a common

It has been conceded by eminent scientists

Oregon Short Line.
A gentleman who has just re
turned from atrip through Eastern
Oregon and Idaho gives the Ore
gonian s glowing account of the
progress which is being made by
the Oregon Short Line. Chief
Engineer Blickendorffer has com'
pleted an inspection of the line
over its entire length to the cross
ing of Snake river at Burnt river
can3om "Work is being pushed

only about fifty miles to be graded
to make the connection with the par
ty working from the east. Much of
the work in this section can be
done with scrapers. It is confi
dently expected that the road will
be finished to Burnt river crossing
this fall. The Idaho people all
consider it certain that the road
will be continued to the Sound.
R. S. Moscript, who, with a party
of surveyors, left Lcwiston some
time since to explore the route
from that point up the Snake, had
at last accounts proceeded fifty
five miles and found a practicable
route for that distance. Engineer
Clarke started from Burnt river
crossing with forty men, five boats
and provisions for two months,
with orders from headquarters to
proceed down the Snake till he
met Moscript'S party. The short
line having left Boise Citj out in
the cold, the citizens of that place
last week organized a corporation
with a capital stock of 5,000,000
to build a railway from Boise to
connect with the O. R. & N. Co's.
road at Burnt river crossing.
"Where are your kids?" a so
ciety man asked, lookinc- at the
bare hands of a poor but deserv
ing editor at a society party. "At
home in bed" was the indignant
reply. "Do you suppose Pd bring
my children to a party like this?"
"Pour oil on troubled waters" is
an old recommendation; in the
modern interpretation of the phrase
we hear such expressions and ad
vice as the following contained in
the closing words of a long article
in the Boston JTerald: During
my jauntings around town I heard
many remarks of a coraplimentary
character in relation to the merits
of St. Jacobs Oil. and one person
said: "There's the venerable
Hanibal Hamlin of Maine, our Ex-Vice-President.
He never wears
an overcoat, and is therefore the
legitimate prey of rheumatism. If
he wants to continue savinir the
expense of an overcoat, and at the
same time escape rheumatism, such
weather as this, he must invest
fifty cents in a bottle of St. Jacobs
Oil and lather himself with it right
well. He will find it a cheap and
serviceable overcoat to keep the
rheumatism from his body.
ucsrrvottly Popular.
Unless it had great merit Parker's
Ginger Tonic could not be so popular.
Its sale has spread remarkably every
where, because invalids find it gives
them new life and vigor when other
medicines fail entirely. Otto Fanner.
"Whence Comes the Name
Of SOZODOXT? It is derived from
two Greek words signifying "to pre

will do this more ropidlj, surely, and
pleasantly. The consumption of SOZO
