C37 i ASTORIA, OREGON: THURSDAY MAY 10, 1BS3 Building eecmE to have just gun. be- Tho pilot schooner went to sea yesterday. The Columbia sailed for S. F. yesterday. Fine weather for building or any other kind of outside work. The fines in the police court for the month of April aggregated S23G, The Buc3:eyt loaded with staves, is reported foundered on Coffin Bock. She will be raised. The cargo was lost. The Lewiston, Idaho, people don't like Villard's recent utterances and are still inclined to put their faith in the O. S. L. Sonio brick makers are .actively at work burning a small kiln of brick as an experiment from the clay on John Hob3on's place on Young's River. The sociable at the residence of Mrs. C. Brown this evening under the auspices of the M. E. church, gives promise of being a very pleasant affair. All aro welcome. The can fillers are giving general satisfaction in the canneries. Five hundred cases is considered a good daj's work for one of those labor-saving contrivances. One Oiled 380 cases last Tuesday in A. Booth's can nery. There is a good deal of hop plant ing done in western Oregon and Washington Territorj' this season. Should the price keep up, the profits will be enormous; but over production in this as in other things will result in a corresponding depression. The entertainment to be 'm in aid of the Y. II. C. A. at Liberty Hall to-morrow evening will doubtless be attended by many of our music loving citizens, while tho other at tractionsamong which is tho "broom drill" must bo seen to be appreciated. At a recent church fair forty young ladies gave an exhibition drill with fans, showing how graceful and bewitchingly the articles can be used. Then the fans were sold by auction, the prices depending on the popularity of its contributor, the whole profit reaching $350. Tho Astoria Iron Works hare Bought a fine piece of property; two lots on the beach west of where the A. B. Field was built on which they intend erecting suitablo build ings as soen as convenient. The price paid was 8,500, and the fact that they were offered $10,000 for their purchase two days after the deed was made, but illustrates the present price of and demand for Astoria real estate. By reference to onr advertising columns it will be seen that the Home Dramatic association will give two representations at Occidental Hall, next Tuesday and Wednesday even ings. Considerable effort in tho mat ter of work and rehearsal has been put on these plays, and this coupled with tho well-known dramatic ability of the performers, will doubtless insure a good house. Notice Relative to Unlawful closures of Public Lands. In- In view of the numerous complaints of the unlawful iuclosures of public lands for stock range purposes, and consequent impediment to settlers, all persons aro hereby notified as fol fel fol eows: The public lauds are opu to settle ment and occupation only under tho public land laws of tho United States, and any unauthorized appropria tion of the same is trespass. Such trespass is equally offensive to law and morals as if upon private property. The fencing of large bodies of pub lic laud beyond that allowed by law is illegal, and against tho right of others who desire to settle or graze their cattle on tho inclosed tracts. Until settlement is made, there is no objection to grazing cattle or cut ting hay on government land, pro vided the lands arc left open to all alike. Graziers are not allowed, on any pretext whatever, to fence the public lands and thus practically withdraw them from the operation of the settle laws. ltos JJepartinent will interpose no objections to the destruction of these fences by persons who desire to make bona Jtde settlement on the inclosed tracts, but arc prevented by the fences, or by threats of violence, from doing so. The government will take proper proceedings against persons unlawfully inclosing tracts of public land when ever, after this notice, it shall appear that by such inclosures they prevent settlements on such lands by others who are entitled to make settlement under the public land laws of the United States. The fish aro hoisted from the boats on to the wharf, where they aro spread on long tables. There the heads and tails are cut off by the "cutters," after which they are put into pickle for about an hour. Then they are taken out, washed in clean water, and laid on flakes to dry, it being found impossible to fry them when wet, the fish all breaking up. After being dried, which on sunny days is done out of doors, and in damp or wet weather in tho dry -house, by means of a circulation of hot and cold air, they are fried in oil. This oil is generally cotton-seed or some cheaper kind. Then they are packed in the cans by the girlB, the smaller fish being put up in oil and the larger in French mustard or in spices. The oil used in packing ought to bo puro olive, but it is found impossible to use it, being so expensive and the price of sardines so low. Cotton seed, peanut aud other kinds of oil are used in packing. After being packed in the cans, the covers aro put on aud sealed. Then they aro put into a bath of boiling water and kept there two hours, tho water being kept boiling. At the end of that time they are taken out and a small hole tapped in each can, to let the hot or expanded air escape, aud immedi ately closed. The can then is air tight, and will keep good for years in any climate. They are then cleaned, packed in cases, and shipped to New York and the west. Tho sardine in dustry has made good times in that locality. Steamer Days.
