Out of gratitude for the assist
ance rendered by the Indians around
St. Lawrence bay, to the crow of the
burned exploring steamer Rogers, the
last congress appropriated 3,000 with
which to purchase presents for them.
The navy department is now prepar
ing to distribute the presents. The
Cortci?i with the material on board
will leave San Francisco for the far
north next mouth.
The run on the Sacramento river is
very, very light and is getting less
every day. Yery few canning houses
are doing anything, and even those
are obliged to "rustle" for fish. To
the Grocer and Canncr it looks as
though both buyers and packers woro
in a bad boat. Fish arc selling for 70
cents, large or small. "Many of the
packers sold for future delivery a
poiitivo number of cases, which they
will either not be ablo to pack at all,
or, if they can, will only do so at a
los3. Other packers, again, sold their
entire pack, whatever it might be, and
many sold a certain number of cases
with the provbo "if packed." Some
have sold as low as L22i f. o. b.,
which is a losing game, considering
the price of fish. The jobbers who
havo made purchases have in many
cases sold positively, and where they
have so done, in nine cases out of ten,
they will havo no fish to deliver. As
a case in peint: one firm of packers on
the Sacramento, which sold a large
number of cases if packed, realizing
that it was a monoy,out-of-pocket
game for them to attempt to pack
and deliver at their contract
price with fish at 70c. apiece,
have not canned a fish thus far, but
they havo been purchasing ou the
river and selling the fresh fish to the
markets. What will the jobber real
ize who purchased from them if packed
and sold as if he had the fish to de
liver? This is not the first lesson of
this kind which the jobbers havo ex
perienced. Lost year and the year
previous some of them had a slight
touch of it, and most likely will
suffer from it again next jear. The
Capitol Packing company of Sacra
mento, finding that they could not
pay the price asked for fish on the
river and pay as much for a 7 or 8-lb.
fish as for one weighing 20 lb3., made
an estimate and concluded that they
could afford to pay 4i e. per lb. with
a stipulated discount for head3, tails
and offal. On their way down the
river they made their offer to fisher
men without getting a fish or finding
a fisherman who would agree to sell
by weight. On their way back, how
over, fishermen ran their boats along
side the steamer and wanted their
fish weighed in. In some instances
they obtained as high as $L50 for one
fish. The idea has rather taken with
them and the Capitol Packing com
pany is having no trouble in getting
fish."
The Color of "Water.
What is tho color of pure water?
Almost any person who has no special
knowledge of the subject will reply at
once "It has no color," yet everybody
knows, either through hearsay or by
tho evidence of his own eyes, that tho
ocean is blue. Why the ocean looks
blua is a question that few who havo
crossed it have ever sought to solve,
and there are, probably, many travel
lers who, though they havo seen most
of the famous rivers and lakes in tho
world, have failed to notice the re
markable differences in color which
their waters present. Even the ocean
is not uniform in color; in some places
its waters are green, or even yellow
ish. Some lakes are distinctly blue;
others present various shades of green,
so that in soma cases they are hardly
distinguishable from their level, grass
covered banks; a few are almost black.
And so also with rivers. From the
mountains to the sea, our own noble
river exhibits every variety from light
est emerald to delicate azure and som
ber black.
Recently Prof.jSpring, of the Uni
versity of Liege, has carefully in
vestigated the question of the color of
water, and has reached some interest
ing conclusions. According to him,
absolutely pura water, when seen in
masses of sufficient thickness, is blue,
and all the varieties of color exhibited
in lakes and streams arise from the
presence in the water of mineral salts
of different degrees of solubility aud
in varying quantities. Water con
taining carbonato of lime in a state of
almost complete solution remaius blue,
but if the solution is less complete the
water will have a tinge of green which
will grow stronger as the point of
precipitation is approached. Prof.
Spring concludes that if lime i3 added
to bluo water, in which so much
carbonate of lime is already do33olvcd
that the point of saturation is ap
proached the water will become green.
In proof of this he cites the fact that
water near tho shores of lakes and
seas, where it comes in contact rith
limestone, is generally of a greener
hue than elsewhere.

Preparations for the entertain
ment at Liberty hall next Friday
evening give promise of a most at
tractive entertainment. Tho best
musical talent of the city will assist in
making it an assured success, and
apart from the novel features of tho
programme tho musical entertainment
will bo of unusual merit. "The Broom
Drill" is now in preparation, and will
be given with all the life and accu
racy that has marked its production
in other places.
The Queen of tic Pacific arrived
in at five o'clock yesterday morning,
and after putting off Astoria mail and
freight proceeded eastward. Capt.
Alexander graciously yielded his op
portunity of making tho fastest trip on
record, to his desire to accommodate
Astorians, and for his reward has the
satisfaction of possessing the good
will and esteem of our citizens, which
as compared to a record of speed, is as
the false and fleeting joys of earth to
the calm assurance of eternal peace
and sempiternal joy.
One of tho most exciting topics
of last week in Olympia was tho gar
roting of one of tho lawyers by a
client who had employed him to con
duct his flit in bankruptcy. It
seems that the lawyer had become
possessed of some $300,000, out of
which ho proposed to take his fee,
wliem the alleged bankrupt and his
wife visited the lawyer's office, at the
dead of night, and literally endoavored
to choke it out of him. They were
bound over the next day on a charge
of assault with intent to rob. Subse
quently tho woman was arrested for
stealing valuable papers from the
lawyer's office and was likewise bound
over on that charge.
San Francisco papers give more de
tailed accounts of tho Eureka disaster
than our Portland friends furnished.
In the Chronicle occurs this:
"Tho raising of the Eurelui obvious
ly resteduponsendingdown intelligence
of her condition in timo to intercept
the Idaho before she starts on her
May trip, and the only possible chance
of intercepting the Idaho lay in an ap
peal to Commander Merryman of the
Onited States steamship Ada;$$. The
Adapts was at J uneau, 145 miles dis
tant from the wreck and could
only be reached by sending a
boat to Killisnoo, forty-fire miles
distant, and there obtaining the
services of one of the Northwest Trad
ing company's steamers to carry the
message to Juneau. Captain Hunter
decided to make the attempt to com
municate with Commander Merriman
and volunteered to make the trip.
The UureJca had brought up on deck
two Astoria fiBhing boats, light and
buoyant, and with one of these Cap
tain Hunter made the trip."
It will be a source of gratification
to our Astoria boat builders to know
that one of their boats was fortunate
ly on hand, to furnish accommoda
tion for Capt. Hunter on his perilous
trip.
