Five steamers landed at Castle Gardens yesterday 4,331 immi grants, of whom 1,357 came on the Berlin from Liverpool, 750 on the Thinvgalla from Copenhagen, and 923 Itallians on the Utopia from Naples. The remainder were Germans from Hamburg and Rot terdam. For the week ending 1 Saturday last 15,952 immigrants were landed. Superintendent Jackson estimates that the num ber of immigrants arriving this year will be 100,000 less than last years arrivals. The blackboard of the free labor bureau in Castle Garden constantly announces that the demand for farm laborers is greater than the supply. Farm hands get imploymcnt at remun erative wages as soon as they land. Mechanics do not fare so well. Petty shop-keepers, without capital, fare the worst. The de mand for girls for house servants is greater than the supply. The Italian immigration is con stantly growing. This is due to the substitution of Italians for Irish and Germans in the construc tion of railroads and works of a similar character. The Irish es pecially are going to the more profitable farm work. The Itali ans are usually hired abroad, and when they reach Castle Gardens are taken away at once by the foremen of the gangs in which the' are to be employed. Nearly all the Itallian immigrants arc men who are either unmarried or leave their families in Italy to live sumptously on a moderate pro portion of the earnings of the men in America. The regular line of Italian steamers brings many Ital ian families. Scandinavians bring more money than any other immigrants, are sober, industrious, and thrifty, and are mostly farmers, who in the west soon obtain farms and become producers. The fact that $0,000,000 were paid out by immigrants for rail road tickets- at Castle Garden alone in the year ending last De cember is an indication of what the immigration is. IF. Yi Suji, April 23. One of my friends from the South, said Mrs. T)r. A. A. Jordan. 51 Lincoln street, "Worcester, Mass., spoke to me very highly of St. Jacobs Oil.
