The Oregon state board of pilot
commissioners went down to tho great
deep on the 2filcs 3esterday afternoon
on their semi-annual tour of inspec
tion. To-day they hold their regular
meeting in this city.
Tho salmon are running bitter
this week. "Reports from up river
canneries are that salmon average ten
to the boat. One reports high boat
at 41, and so on down to 7, ten
boats bringing in 103 fish.
The fire alarm last Sunday night
was the usual stery: "Chinaman's
chimney." Tho same chimney came
near being the cause of another fire
alarm yesterday afternoon. That
chimney and other chimneys like it
will be costly affairs if not fixed as
they ought to bo.
Henry Yillard told the Walla
Walla folks last Saturday, that he
would assuro them such cheap rates
on freight down the Columbia that
they "wouldn't care whether produce
went to Portland or the Sound."
They might prefer to ship ia bulk to
Astoria and load deep sea going ves
sels at the seaport of Oregon.
D. P. Thompson is going ahead
with the Columbia Water company.
Last Saturday he bought the entire
property of the Welch Hill water
works, paying therefor $G,500, which
was cheap. The transfer will be made
July 1st. Yesterday Mr. Thompson
bought Youngs river falls from Wm.
Knicmeyer, paying for that pictur
esque bit of scenery the sum of
$2,500.
A new mode of fattening oysters
has been discovered and used at
Franklin City to great advantage,
especially as the oysters are poor thii
season. Tho oysters are put in floats
and covered with fresh water two or
three inches deep. A hose attached
to the boiler of a steamer is then used
to heat tho water just enough to cause
the oysters to open their mouths and
to drink. After taking three or four
drinks they fatten rapidly and are
soon ready for tho market. Re
porter. The Grocers' Gazelle, London, un
der date of April 7th, says of salmen:

ers, which, being of satisfactory qual
ity and decidedly cheaper than Col
umbia river, meets with considerable
attention. Our Liverpool correspon
dent writes: The demand for Colum
bia river packing is at present verj'
slow, but prices are well sustained,
and there is no reason to anticipate
any weakness, the whole being well
and firmly held." The writor of the
above ignores the fact that Columbia
salmon is the best.

door. For that reason it is always in

ventative to those fellows if they
know that when tho engines got there
they were in for a good swish that
would sweep some of the nastiness
out, and bo of sanitary benefit as well
as giving them to understand that
water had some terrors for them if a
burning chimney hadn't.

Drowned in tho Kecanlcuni.
About six miles from the Seaside on
the Necanicum, John Hoffman a sin
gle man aged about 40 yeaw, has
lived on a claim for a number of years.
Of late ho has been somewhat unlucky,
and was on the point of going away.
His evident symptoms of insanity ex
cited tho interest of his neighbors,
and after the burning of his house,
about five weeks ago it was noticed
that he was entirely out of his mind.
About a month ajo he disappeared
and the oniy trace of him that
could be found were foot tracks
leading to the creek, showing where
he had forded it, and then started
down to the creek again where tho
tracks stopped. Diligent search was
made but to no purpose, till last Sun
day when one of the neighbors found
his dead body lying on vhe bank. The
inevitable presumption is that he
started in a frenzy to wade the creek,
and the swift current took him off his
feet into a deep hole below. Under
the circumstances it was considered
unnecessary to hold an inquest, and
the body was yesterday given decent
burial by tke residents of that lo
cality. How Villard got a Start.
Yillard has made a great fortune.
It 13 put at all kinds of figures. Some
say he ha3 from $20,O00,C00 to S25,
CDO.OOO. Villard was a young Ger
man of respectable but not at ali aris
tocratic family, who camo to this
country some years before the war.
He had a knack for business and al
though for some ycara he h id to be a
newspaper correspondent and get
beaten around from point to point, he
kept money in his mind. He made
his first money in a big whisky deal in
Washington. Aware that the taxes
would have to be raised in- order to
provide the government with the rev
enue, he addressed himself to know
ing when and to what extent tho taxes
would be raised on vital matters like
whisky, tobacco, cic. In that way he
became connected with Horace
While, who was a political correspon
dent, clerk of committee, etc. Those
men and a few of their friends made
good round sums of money for that
day, perhaps $50,000 to 150,000
apiece. Cincinnati Enquirer.
Steamer Day.
Last Sunday was what might be
termed "steamer day" at Astoria.
About cloven o'clock the Oregon
fired her gun, arriving from San
Francisco; in her wake camo the
Idaho from the north, with coal for
Capt. Flavcl; and about four miles
astern steamed in the Gyps'j a jaunty
little craft from below, with combusti
bles. This boat will go into the Hino
trade between San Juan and Tacoma.
In the meantime the Willamette was
making a landing just down from
Portland, and with the deep bass of
the ocean steamers whistles alternated
the lighter treble of tho river steam
ers. Every dock had a steamer in
front of it and presented a lively ap
pearance. In tho near future we
hope to have such bustle of arrivals
and departures a daily occurrence.

Tho London Pish Exhibition.
The largest and most complete fish
show ever held will be opened by
Queen Yictoria at tho South Ken
sington gardens, London, during tho
present month, which in importance
and extent, it is expected, will eclipse
tho great exhibition of 1879. All
branches connected with fish or fishing
in their practical, commercial, scien
tific, and historic ways will be repre
sented. One class of exhibits will
include sea fishing gear of all kinds.
Fresh water fishing will be represented
by rods, reels, artificial flies, etc.
Another class will show all kinds of
articles used and worn by fishermen,
even to the clothing. Fish in all
forms canned and uncanned, as pre
pared for commerce will occupy a
large space, and will constitute one
of the most important features of the
show.
From former show3 of this kind
held in Europe great benefit has been
reaped by this country. Above nil, a
vast increase of export trade for
American fish products has Bprung up
from these exhibitions. To Australia
alone are now sent ten times as many
of these products as in 1870 last
year's shipments amounted to two
million dollars.
The fishing interests of tho United
States greatly exceed those of any
other country, and it is expected that
tho exhibits shown by us will surpass
all others in tho completeness and va
riety of articles shown. For the col
lective exhibit at Berlin the United
States obtained the first prize aud tho
greatest fame; and the collection made
up for London is more perfect, especi
ally in angler's miterial, than the one
sent to Berlin.
Prof. Baird has loaued and seat
over from tho Smithsonian Institution
a very large and important collection
of fresh, stuffed, and preserved fish,
and many plaster casts of odd and
curious occupants of tho sea. The
spacious structure in which the exhi
bition is to be held is located in the
beautiful gardens of South Kensing
ton. The Berlin exhibition was visited
by 483,000 people, while this one in
London, a city of 5,000,000 inhabi
tants, will unquestionably bo visited
by several million.
Where it "Went to.
When there was a show for a rail
road to a certain villago in Michigan,
the citizens of the town came forward
as thej were able and subscribed for
stock, and the road was finally built.
A year or so after, when tho man who
had worked up tho boom was sottltd
in a fat position, and figured promi
nently in railroad reports, a subscriber
called upon him and said: "Mr.
Blank, I subscribed for 100 worth of
stock in tho G. R. Y. road." "Yea."
"That made me a stockholder!" "It
did." "But I have never been noti
fied of any meetings, and I under
stand that my stock has no value."
"Well, you see, we had to mort
gage the road for tho iron."
"Yes." "Then we changed tho
name." "Yes." "Then wo pooled
with tho B. & W. road." "Yea.''
"Then we cleared out the old board
and elected a new one." "Yes.
"Then we voted to extend to tho
present terminus." "Yes." "Well,
just where the vote was which cancel
ed your stock or absorbed it, I can
not remember, but if you are laboring
under tho delusion (hat you have any
financial intorest in our road, the
president will request the vice-president
to instruct the auditor to order
the secretary to consult the minutes
of the various meetings and try aud
discover which hole the common stock
went into when tho preferred wa
