A boy of eight years, was recently
asked by his teacher where the zenith
was- lie replied: "The spot in the
heavens directly over one's head.' To
test his knowledge further the teacher
asked: "Can two persons have the
same zenith at the same time?"
"They can." "How?" "If one
elands on the top of the other's head."
Our attention was yesterday di
rected to a singular case at the hos
pital, a man suffering from swollen
extremities and a virulent rash which
covered his entire body. It was said
to be a case of salmon poisoning; it
seems there are individuals who can
not eat Columbia's staple with impu
nity. It is the opinion of the physi
cian that in this instance the salmon
was allowed to remain for a consider
able time before being dressed.

ViUard's Portland. Address.
Henry Tillard addressed 1,500 peo
ple at Portland last Wednesday. Ho
talked business; said that the final
completion of the N. P. IX. R. track
would bo made some time in August;
that he had successfully financiered
all the great enterprises he had on
hand; the energy of the company had
been bent on completing the main
line; future work was to be the con
struction of anxiliary linos and feeders;
the line down the Columbia from
Portland to a point opposite Kalama,
will be completed by the end of next
September; the line
junction on the Pend
from ralouee
d'Oreille divi-
sion of the X. P. R. R. would be
completed as far as Moscow this sea
son; active work was to be maintained
on the southern extention of the O. &
C. R. R.; that work was extraordina
rily expensive but the Oregon &
Transcontinental had the money and
they were going to put it through; he
believed a through train could start,
from Portland to San Francisco by
August 1st, 1884; the distance between
the two cities was 700 miles, time
thirty hours; he thought the increased
travel would more than compensate
for the decrease that the completion
of the railroad route would occasion
to the steamship company. On this
point he said:
A contract for a lease has recently
been entered into between the Oregon
and Transcontinental company and
the Oregon and California railroad
company, under which the Grst men
tioned company is to lease the lines of
the last mentioned company for 999
years that is. practically, in perpet
uity. Now, the Oregon and Trans
continental company holds the con
trolling interest of the stocks of the
Oregon Railway & Navigation compa
ny and of the Northern Pacific Rail
road company. By acquiring the
Oregon and California railroad through
this nernetual lease, it is placed ia a
position to mako up whatever loss it
may experience as an Oregon Kauway
and Navigation company stockholder,
from the decreaso of the passenger
traffic over the ocean line between
Portland and San Francieco, by the
increase in the U-turns of the Oregon
and California railroad company.
Now, if there were two rival, hostile
interests to be reconciled in this re
spect; that is, if the Oregon and Cali
fornia had remained under indepen
dent controlTand the Oregon Railway
and Navigation company had remain
ed under independent control, then
the completion of the Oregon
and California to the connection
with the California system would
never have been practicable.
That is, no sound financiers
would have undertaken to furnish the
money for an enterprise that would
have been obliged forever to meet the
ocean competition between here and
San Francisco. My success in over
coming the entire pending financial
troubles of the Oregon and California
railroad company has also placed that
company in a position to provido for
the construction of lines that have
been contemplated under the original
charter of the company all along, but
the completion of which seemed until
now extremely remote. I refer to the
extension of the west side division of
the Oregon & California from Corvallis
to Junction City and to the extension
Bion of the main line of the west side
division from Forest Grove to Astoria.
We have actually decid d to build
the first mentioned lino from Corval
lis to Junction City and I am now haY
ingacareful investigation made into the
merits of the other extension, and if
the investigation should result favor
ably that is, should show that the
construction of the Forest Grove and
Astoria line would be a profitable
thing for U3 to undertake, then that
line will bo built also, as I had occa
sion to say to a committee of the Asto
ria people yeaterday."
In roference to matters immediately
concerning Portland, Mr. Yillard
said that the companies he represent
ed intended to make improvements
which would cost in the a"gregato
$5,000,000 in Portland; that he con
sidered Portland S3 a railroad canter,
and that provided the wheat was
brought to Portland and stored there
it would have very little effect upon
Portland's prosperity as a city if the
wheat was not loaded directly in ves
sels from there. In reference to the
Columbia river ho thought that as the
importance of the Columbia river
trade became more clearly understood
in the east, federal appropriations
would be made for improvement. He
told his hearers that it was uecessary
for him to have a bridge across the
Willamette at Portland, and any pre
vention of that plan would result in
stoppimr all railroad building etc., in
that vicinity till the opposition ceased.
The Portland papers report his speech,
in full aud think that it will have the
effect of aiding the growth and pros
perity of that city to an extraordinary
extent, in tins tlicy voice iho uni
versal opinion of the citizens of Port
land.
In reference to Portland's new ho
tel, Mr. Yillard administered a little
reproof to the good people of that city
in this wise:
I make bold to say that the hotel
enterprise has been a sore spot with
mo all along. Having done so much
directly and indirectly for your city,
it seemed to me that tho work of pro
viding a hotel, largo and comfortable
enough to meet the increased demands
for hotel accommodations that have
sprung up since my last visit here
would be made by yourselves.
1 was very sorry and disappointed
that the efforts that were made in that
direction by our representatives here, t
did not prove successful. L should
like to point to the example, as worthy
of imitation, of a city much smaller
than this, containing much less ac
cumulated wealth, but it seems to me
containing quite as much enterprise
and perhaps more. 1 refer to the
city of Seattle on Puget Sound.
The people there were very anxious
to have a little local road built They
did not ask me to do it at my own ex
pense, but they offered to mako a very
large contribution towards it As you
may have seen through the papers
they have agreed to give $150,000
toward that object. You hero could
have given just as well a million of
dollars towards a hotel enterprise as
the people of Seattle could give $150,
000 for the railroad.
Now we are so well satisfied of the
very largo transcontinental travel
and travel of the best class that will
be attracted here upon the completion
of the Northern Pacific railroad, that
we consider it our duty as a transpor
tation line to provide the hotel ac
commodations that your citizens of;
Jrortiand here had not
enterprise
enough to provide tor us.
e could not help ourselves,
have gone reluctantly into it.
ought not to keep hotels as here,
ought to manage railroads and
the keeping of hotels to others,
said, wc must have these large

hotel
accommodations, and therefore the
city will have the benefit of them. T
trust that hereafter a more liberal
spirit in promoting local enterprise
will animate yon, and those of you
who have wealth have it at their com
mand to promote such enterprises."
