The Astoria Railroad.
Henry Villard since coming
to the northwest this last time has
talked to the principal communi
ties; to Portland, to Astoria
through its chamber of commerce,
and to the Sound. He has told
his plans, and given his ideas with
a degree of fairness. He is enti
tled to credit in this respect thathe
has so far done all that he prom
ised. "We do not recall a single
unfulfilled promise. Of course it
is impossible for a man in his posi
tion to positively predicate or defi
nitelv set dates: he cannot special
ize: in all he says he must keep
in mind the fact that other com
munities are jealous of any faror
or attention he might be disposed
to show, and that his interests pre
clude any thing beyond a dollars
and cents view of matters. In
telling our Astoria chamber of
commerce for instance, that if the
road would pay he would build it,
and if it didn't he wouldn't, he
told Astorians nothing they didn't
know already. But it was news
that he had the money ready to
build the road between here and
Forest Grove, and that if his com
pany concluded not to build the
road he would not stand in the
way of the forfeiture of the grant.
That last clause doesn't amount to
much anyhow. But that is a mat
ter that doesn't call for present
discussion. It is about as certain
as a thing can be that the en-
gineering party which is now on
the Nehalem will report favorably.
Yc do not see how they can do
otherwise. The country is a mag
nificent one, the timber unsur
passed in quality or quality on
this northwest coast, the grade an
easy one, and the probabilities in
the way of traffic such as would
justify the expenditure entailed
by the building of sixty miles of
railway. It is our opinion that
the road will be built. Its effect
upon our city and surrounding
country is something that needs
no comment. Astoria is now in
as prosperous condition as any
community in the Union. Her
position is assured, the building of
the railroad will bring additional
population into the county; there
will be a shifting and settling to
the new order of things; prices
will be changed in some lines of
trade, competition will be a little
keener in others, and in general
the fact of being the terminus of a
lino will be a help to our city. As to
real estate we are of those who be
lieve property is about as high now
as is good for the place. While
the price of real estate is always
an index to the prosperity of a
place yet, it is not always to the
common interest of a community
to have " it reach prices not war
ranted by present size nor imme
diate probabilities. Property is
too high in Portland, Villard's
Wednesday speech will tend to
make it still higher. While this
is well enough for individuals, yet
in a wider sense it does not add
to the material prosperity of the
place.
On the whole Astoria is to be
congratulated on the outlook, and
now if our salmon fisheries were
on a basis of more apparent per
. manence we know of nothing
wanting to make it the city that it
should be always excepting the
improvement of the bar, a subject
that must be kept prominent and
continually agitated in season and
out of season, till congress does its
duty, and the commerce of the
Columbia flows unvexed to the
sea.
The Boston Herald saj's that
the politicians who imagine that
the tariff question can be dodged
or postponed until after the next
presidential election are reckoning
without their hests. The people
can get along for the neit term
with a Republican or a Democrat
in the white house, but they can't
get along without tax reduction,
and they don't intend to try.
The Oil City Derrick dislikes
the new word, "dude," and thinks
the older fortn, "squirt," more ap
propriate. Another paper thinks
"fool" about covers the case, while
& third thinks the good old biblical
term, "ass," is better.
A signal station is to be estab
lished on the summit of Mount
Whitney, Cal., the highest point
in U. S. territory.
A Washington correspondent
says: "The guard of soldiers
which is maintained at Garfield's
grave has been made the subject
of newspaper comment and criti
cism, and brings to mind the fact
that there is a mystery surround
ing the tamb of Abraham Lincoln.
Years ago grave-robbers attempted
to steal the body, but Elmer
Washburne, who was then chief of
the secret service, so stationed his
men that the ghouls were caught
in the very act. There is no guard

the secretary of "war, said recently
that it is so thoroughly protected
that be is absolutely certain that
the remains of his distinguished
father could never be stolen. The
attempt to steal the body brought
about the present means of protec
tion, "which, are known to but three
persons. With thorn rests the
secret, but it is said that in a short
time it will be imparted to Colonel
Rockwell, who was one of G.u
fieldsmost intimate friends, for
use at the latterls final resting
place."
Does the increasing transfer of
iron from the interior to the sur
face of the earth, asks JCnowledge,
exercise any sensible meteorologi
cal influence? Is it in any marked
way influential on electric cur
rents, and thence does it affect
magnetic storms? This is a ques
tion, whicli needs a little thought
to answer safely. The develop
ment of railways and the almost
universal substitution of iron for
wood wherever it is practicable to
use that metal, must surely exer
cise a decided influence of its own."
Every year more and more of the
iron formerly buried deep in the
earth is spread upon its surface,
and it is reasonable to asume that,
electrically at least, some effect is
produced.
The land league is in session in
Philadelphia. It is composed of
freft Americans of Irish descent
from all parts of the Union, is de
scribed by Boyle O'Reilly as be
ing the parliament of a people
uithout a country, and it is the
largest gathering of that organiza
tion ever held on this side of the
Atlantic.
The Boston Commercial says:
"The theory that the rainfall or
water-power of the United States
has.been affected in any way by
the destruction of forests is devoid
of foundation in fact. We have
investigated the matter carefully,
and there is no truth in it."
Bismarck wants to buy 10,000,
000 acres of land in Mexico,
whereon to found a German colo
ny, which would retain allegiance
to the mother country. An airing
of the "Monroe doctrine" is now
in order.

clamor for a division of territory,
California, Tennesse and Michigan
have long demanded segregation.

paper Hue is the establishment of
an organ in "Washington "to advo
cate compulsory education."
