TEE 'WORLD ON SHOW.
Nearly all the countries of Eu
rope are busying themselves this
year with international expositions.
In number and diversity nothing
like this array has ever been seen.
There have been greater fairs in
past years at London, Paris, Vien
na, and Philadelphia; but it is the
multitude of these shows arranged
for 1883 that is astonishing.
Should the transatlantic travel
ler of the present season have a
mind for metallurgy and minerals,
he will find in Spain an exhibi
tion of them open on May day at
Madrid. If his sympathies lead
him to take an interest in wine
culture, he can turn to the vine
dresser's exposition, held by Portu
gal, hard by, at Lisbon, with its
added show of agriculture and of
farming implements. Should his
tastes lean rather toward art, he
may indulge them at Bavaria's
display in Munich, where some
American artists will be found
competing in an exhibition expect
ed to prove of unusual excellence;
then there is a similar exhibition
to be held in Rome. Austria will
open an international electric ex
hibition at Vienna on the 1st of
August, where specimens of the
various wonderful appliances that
have so transformed modern life,
and that are destined to work
changes, will be collected.
There will be an old-fashioned
universal exhibition of the pro
ducts of all climes and nations at
Amsterdam, this being the central
show of the year; and connected
with it will be an exhibition and
festival of music which is specially
worthy of note. If the tourist
should be a devotee of the line
and rod, he will feast with eyes
and mind upon Great Britain's
exhibition of Ssh and fisheries at
London, conducted on so grand a
scale that it will no doubt surpass
even the fish show of Berlin. But
should the perfume of flowers
be more to his fancy and
there is no accountiug for tastes
ho will perhaps betake
himself to Russia's horticultural
fair, which, should no dynamite
prevent, will be held next month
at St. Petersburg. At Zurich he
will find Switzerland conducting,
from the 1st of May to the 1st of
October, a general exhibition of
the products of the earth and of
manufacturing industry.
But the traveler need not jjo
eastward to find world's fairs. At
the far west, San Diego intends
that such a show shall grace her
tercentennial celebration; while in
July Venezuela will commemorate
by a like exposition, at Caracas,
the hundredth anniversary of the
birthday of Bolivar. The 3'ear
will wind up with a world's fair at
Calcutta, modelled after the one
held in Australia.
So, from Caracas to Calcutta,
from San Diego to St. Petersburg,
a large part of the world is build
ing booths this year in which to
make national and international
shows of goods. The United
States came near engaging in the
same business during this summer.
The most note worthy suggestion of
the present preparations is that
universal expositions seem to bo
displaced to a certain extent by
the exhibitions of special arts and
industries, which now multiply and
flourish. N". Y. Sun.
The Cincinnati Commercial Ga
zette estimates the quantity of old
whiskies in bonds at S0,000,000
gallons. This is not what is called
the whiskey of commerce, but is
expected to be used as a beverage.
Tt places the number of drinks in
a. gallon at sixty-four. The num
ber of drinks in bond, therefore, is
5,120,000,000, or 102 to every
man, woman and child in the
United Slates. How long this
whiskey will last depends upon
the number of persons who drink
it. & bit of information not easily
obtained. It is pi cbable, however,
that not more than 10,000,000 of
the population drink, and the cal
culation is. probrbly correct that
there is enough of this class of
whiskey on hand to meet the de
mand for five years.
The Chehalis.
Several men have recently gone
to the Chehalis valley, to engage
in the cattle business. A few will
engage in raising sheep. This
class of men will find this business
especially profitable, on account of
the excellent -wild grass that pre
vails. The Humptulips country
north of Gray's harbor, is now at
tracting a great amount of atten
tion. The soil is rich and the
grass and timber good. A num
ber are also Ideating in the south
western part of Mason county,
which presents substantially the
same inducements. A colony of
Mennonites have recently located
in that section, and will engage in
farming there. They are industri
ous people, and it is thought will
prove of great advantage to that
section.
The government surveyors arc
at work on the second tier of
townships cast of the Pacific shore,
and north of Hoquiam, and the
land will soon be open for settle
ment. It is said to be exception
ally good. The Hoquiam mills are
employing about thirty men, and
two ships ate at present loading
lumber for Simpson & Co. This
firm has just opened a new store
to supply the mill hands and
other. The cedar mill at Cosmo
polis which is running by water
power, is working five men. A
good market is offered for all the
cedar that can be manufactured.
A monster cougar was killed
about one mile above David Byles'
place, near Elma, last Monday.
Hany Dunlap was following the
animal with his dogs, and some
strangers passing along the roj.d,
heard the noise of the pursuit,
went to investigate the cause, and
found themselves confronted by
the ferocious monster. Luckily
his attention was drawn to the
dogs, and thus occured an oppor
tunity to shoot him. He measured
seven feet, eight inches from tip
to tip, and his estimated weight
was nearly five hundred pounds.

Under the title of "Old Probabili
ties" one of the most useful and
valuable officers of the United
States Government is most widely
known. But quite as well known
is Prof. J. H. Tice, the meteorolo
gist of the Mississippi Valley,
whose contributions to his favorite
study have given him an almost
national reputation. On a recent
lecture tour through the North
west, the Professor had a narrow
escape from the serious conse
quences of a sudden and very dan
gerous illness, the particulars of
which he thus refers te: "The
day after concluding my course of
lectures at Burlington, Iowa, on
the 21st of December last, was
seized with a sudden attack of
neuralgia in the chest, giving me
excruciating pain and almost pre
venting breathing. My pulse
usually bO, fell to 3d; intense
nausea of the stomach succeeded
and a cold, clammy sweat covered
my entire body. The attending
plysician could do nothing to re
lieve me. After suffering for
three hours I thought as L had
been using St. Jacobs Oil with
good effect for theumatic pains I
would trr it. I saturated a piece
of flannel large enough to cover
my chest, with the Oil, and ap
plied it. The relief was almost
instantaneous. In one hour I
was entirely free from pain, and
would have taken the train to fill
an appointment in a neighboring
town had my friends not dissuaded
me. As it was, I took the night
train for my home, in St. Louis,
and have not been troubled since."

railroad near Bozeman which, if
prolonged, would make a circle

very sharp curve, as 720 feet is
the smallest which is considered
safe, and the curves are always
larger if room is to be had.
