What Mr. Yillard Says to Astoria.

Astoria chamber of commerce,
"consisting of Messrs. I. "W. Case,
C. W. Fulton, A. W. Berry, J. D.
Merry-man, and Dr. Aug. 0. Kin
ney, met Henry Villard this after
noon. After the usual courtesies
were interchanged I. "YV. Case pro
pounded a question as to what
Mr. Villard proposed to do for
Astoria in the way of a railroad.
In response that gentleman spoke
at considerable length. He recit
ed the disastrous financial history
of the Oregon & California railroad,
showed how it had always been an
absolute impossibility on the part
of that company to build the road
in question, and related under
what circumstances the road that
he represented was connected with
the grant, ne said, in speaking
of the railroad construction, that
within the past few months such
financial arrangements had been
made as would render it at least
possible to raise money to build a
line of railroad from Forest Grove
to Astoria, but that no railroad
could or would be built until after
a complete survey had been made,
which survey was to demonstrate
that the timber and possibilities of
agricultural interests along the
proposed line of road would justi
fy the building of the railroad,
He said that a competent survey
ing party had been sent out, and
with them was a timber expert,
that they were to make a complete
investigation not only of the line of
route of the proposed road but of
the quantity of timbei, its acces
sibility to market, the mineral re
sources of the country, etc. He
expected to have a report from
those parties insMc of sixty days,
and he would then decide imme
diately whether or not the road
should be built. If the report
went to show that the building of
the road would inure to the bene-
" fit of the railroad company, then
work would begin at onco. If the
report was adverse, the public
would be at once informed of the
fact.
Tn answer to a question from
another member of the commit-
tee as to his attitude toward what
is now known as the Astoria
land grant, Mr. Villard said
that if the Oregon & Cali
fornia railroad company de
cided not to build the railroad, he
would not protest against the land
being returned to the public
domain. In his remarks on this
point he told the committee that
he expected in case the railroad
were built that Astoria would fur
nish grounds suitable and sufficient
for terminal facilities, as he must
have room to turn round. The
committee promised that the citi
zens of Astoria would do all in
their power to secure such termi
nal facilities, and the interview
closed.

An Arkansas editor having re
tired from the business leaves this
clear and satisfactory explanatien:
"It is. due to the public that I
should make a full confession be
fore I retire from the active con
trol of the Spider. I procured
the position merely to secure of
fice, and now that I have been
elected constable of this precinct .
I step aside to give some other ah
piring man a chance. I have
made many friends and killed two
men during my editorial career,
for which I am thankful and deep
ly indebted to this community."
On the 24th of next month will
begin in Chicago an exhibition
which will attract universal inter
est. It is an exposition of Ameri
can railway appliances. The hun
dred and ten thousand miles of
railway in this country have occa
sioned the highest development of
the business and everything in
railroad use will be exhibited on
the shore of Lake Michigan.
In this country there are nearly
seven thousand millions of
dollars invested in railways:
they give employment to nearly
five hundred thousand men; some
of the keenest minds in the nation
are constantly making improve
ments, and the Chicago exhibition
will illustrate all that is best in
this great system.
