Tno Latest Plot Kill the Czar.
The latest plot to kill the Czar
was discovered in the begininjr of
last month. A student of fine arts
attempted to committ suicide in a
bath, but was discovered in time
to prevent his purpose. On being
questioned as to his motive for the
act lie confessed that it was owing
to his connection with the nihilists.
He had been commanded by that
body to kill the Czar, and had ta
ken measures to do so, but his
courage failed at the critical mo
ment, and, knowing what would
be his fate from the nihilists, he
preferred suicide. The attempt on
the Czar's life was to have been
made at the time when the regi
mental fete of the Finland Regi
ment was celebrated, the Czar
having been ptesenl at the ban
quet on that occasion. I he stu
dent managed to be present in
the guise of a waiter and was
armed with a pocket revolver, in
tending when he fouud himself
face to face with the Czar to fire.
This opportunity soon arrived, but
at the critical moment his courage
failed, and in the confusion he
hurried from the room and ran
straight to the bath, where he
made the attempt on his own life.
The information which the police
obtained from him enabled them
to make some arrests. I his latest
discovery is said to have made a
profound impression on the Car.
M. Tolstoi requested the Czar to ,
exercise crreater precautions and i
to expose himself as little as possi
ble, to which his Majesty replied:
uIt is all the same to me and I am
now prepared for anything, J
have escaped by the merest chance
and you and I were alike ignorant
of the danger 1 was in."
It is stated that should the
emperor of Annam refuse the de
mands of France 1000 troops and
several gunboats will be sent to
occupy strategic points ou the
Santrkoir river.
