A rosy-checked, black-eyed miss, says: "If I was a newspaper man and could 6nd nothing of more inter est to write about than widows, 1 would lay aside my pen and go at some other employment." "You may be a widow yourself, some day." This seemed to arouse Miss Blackeyes. "Me!" Me a'widowT" she said; "I would not remain a widow; I would marry again, right away." "It is not always so easy to marry a3 you seem to think.' "That may be true, but I would not live a widow; I know that." Of course yon can remain single, sind An Essay on Roller Skates. The roller skate is a wayward little quadruped. It is as frolicsome and more innoceut looking than a lamb, but for interfering with one's upright attitude in the community it is per haps the best machine that has ap peared in Sal t Lake City. One's first feeling on standing upon a pair of roller skates is an uncontroll able tendency to come together. One foot may start out toward Idaho while the other as promptly strikes out for Arizona. Portland is not behind Astoria in the matter of street improvements this season. A large amount of grad ing and street work is being done in the metropolis. The Astoria Gaslight Co. has its buildings noarty completed, and by the first week in May, everything will bo in readiness to begin the work of supptying consumers. The Aficsbeforo leavingGray's har bor on her last trip lowed out the schooners Garfield, Enterprise and Tbriray. She leave3 for Gray's har bor at seven o'clock this morning. Henry Yillard was in New Taco ma last Thursday; yesterday he went to Seattle and is expected to return to Portland to-day. The Ntvc$ says lie will start for Montana to-morrow. "What! and live and die an old maid? Horrid! I'd rather bo a widow a dozen times," adding after a. pause, "but I guess there is not much danger of my living an old maid," and words can give no adequate idea of the air of satisfaction and easy assurance of that blooming damsol. "When is it to take place?" Gleefully she laughed and answered: "Now would it not be nice for me to toll you, and have an account full, true and particular, ap pear in the paper, along with the patent medicine advertisements, obitu ary notices and such, other interesting matter. No, I thank 3011," and with mock gravity, making a most profound obeisance, she went her way, happy in the present, confident of the future. Hotel Arrivals. One of tho most noticeable things at a skating rink is the strong attrac tion between the human body and the floor of the rmk. If the human body had been coming through spaco for days and days, a the rate of a million miles a second, without stopping at eating stations; and not excepting Sundays, when it strikes the floor, we could understand whv it struck the floor with so much violence. As it is, however, the thing is inexplicable. There are different kinds of falls in j vogue at the rink. Thero are the rear falls aud front falls, Cardinal Wolsey fall, the fall one across the other three in a pile, and so on. There are some of the falls I would like to be excused from describing. The rear fall is tho favorite. It is more frequently utilized than any other. There are two positions in skating, the perpendicular and hori zontal. Advanced skaters prefe tho perpendicular, while others prefer the horizontal. Skates are no respecters of persons. They will lay out a minister of the Goanel or the mayor of the city as readily as they will a short-coated, one-suspendered boy, or a giddy girl. When one of a man 'a feet starts for Nevada and the other for Colorado, that does nut separate him from the floor orbreakuphisfun. Olherportions of his body will take the place his feet have just vacated with a promptness that is snrprisising. And he will find that tho fun has just begun for tho people looking on. The equipments of tho rink are a pair of skates, a cushion, and a bottle of liniment. Boomerang. JUST RECEIVED ! A.11 immense shipment of HATS AI TRIMMINGS I Of the latest shades aud styles. A San Francisco correspondent wants to know "what is the floating population of your city?" We should estimate tho "floating" population of Astoria in tho summertime at 3,500. "We know of no city on the coast where the "floating" population constitutes so large a percentage of the inhabitants. Work on the Odd Fellows build ing goes ahead. They were met by others of their number on the deck. The orders last evoning were "start forS n at five o'clock to-morrow morning." Good enough. The Eureba, Cal., Times-Telephone has been hearing some strange railroad stories. Among other strange reports a statement that the Northern Pacific Coast railroad will run along the coast from Sonoma county up into Humboldt and Del Norte. Stranger still, that that may be extended up to Coos county. Strangest of all is that with a little strip of Douglas and Benton counties to cros3 comes Tillamook where our neighbors are looking out for just such a railroad; tho road bed into Clatsop county would cap the climax of stranjio doincs. Our northern iauiorma contemporary justly says "these may be but rumors." True, true: The same paper has between 200 and 300 land timber claim notices which may also be "mere rumors." The reading of Miss A . R. Luse at Liberty Hall would doubtless have been attended by a much larger audi ence had it not been for the stormy evening. As it was the hall was fairly filled. MissLuse is a lady of pleasing Toico aud manner and won the plau dits of her audience by the able rendi tion of several selections. Where all was good it would be invidious J.o select, but we were particularly struck with her recital of Poe's "Bells." This has been attempted so often that it requires a certain amount of bravery to recite it. Miss Luse did full justice to it and demon strated her great elocutionary power. She will read again this evening at tho same tiino and place. We bespeak a full house. Men are like houses. They are flats. Thev, too, have bricks within their fiats. They're mortgaged, hammered, nailed and floored, And have room-attics, and their board. Houses have tenants, and, we guess, A man has ten aunts, more or less. Both have top stories, empty quite. And each doth take carpenter richt. Houses and men of ancient dates Have scanty locks and broken gaits. Houses on corners stand, with stairs ; Men do the same. Both need repairs.
