About twelve hundred persons
have contributed from $175,000 to
$200,000 for the development of
the Keelcy motor, and the process
of development is not yet finished.
Great Britain, stimulated by the
example of the United States, is
making some effort to reduce the
principal of her debt, having re
duced it by 7,000,000 or 835,
000,000 in the past year.
Homer had to wait 3,000 years
before he got into print; but times
have changed, and now a little
overmuch whisky and a wild yell
or two on the public streets will
do the business for am'body.
The editor of the New Orleans
Picayune having been thinking
deeply upon the subject concludes
that "one egg a day is about the
best a hen can do. She has no
idea of having anything laid over
for the next da'."
A Florida shark swallowed an
eiffht-dav clock accidentally
dropped into the water, and seven
da's later ran ashore near Pensa
cola to have it wound up. You
can't fool a shark with any of your
dollar-store clocks.
Mr. Cu minings was a candidate
for Alderman in St. Louis- He
wrote to the Spectater: "Give me
a little puff. Tf you ask any one
that knows me, you will find that
I am hot unworthy of your sup
port. I enclose $10." The editor
printed the letter by way of a
' "little puff," and gave the money
to charity.
The Philadelphia Times hopes
"Mr. Jay Goujd will not challenge
the American Navy to a trial of
, speed or of safety with his new
yatch. Humiliation is not becom
ing to the American nation." The
Times also notices that "the Sec
,, retary of what is known as the
American Navy did not see the
yacht launched," and adds: "There
is such a thing as prolessional
jealousy."
What the London Times wants
is for us to get up a little coercion
act of our own over her and do
special police service for the
British benefit, and this is more
than there is any likelihood of
being granted. As long as the
Irish agitators in the United States
keep within the laws they cannot
be interfered with. "When they
violate it they will be dealt with
like any other criminals.
Cotton seed oil is becoming a
powerful rival to oleomargarine.
Twenty years ago the seed of cot
ton, when ginned from the fibre,
was considered a nuisance, and
tons of it were cast into the
Mississippi every year. Sudden
ly it was discovered that the oil
yielded by it on compression was
palatable, and the experiment of
sending it in bulk to Italy, to be
there used as an adulteration of
olive oil, was made. This met
with favor, and for many years but
little Italian olive oil has come to
this country not largely adultera
ted with cotton-seed oil.
opinion upon acts which are inex
tricably involved with his diplo
matic duties. But the dispatches
which day by day fill our columns
with criminal conspiracy and igno
ble fears must, after all, rouse in
every American pity for both op
pressor and oppressed. It is sad
that any cause should stir men to
this excess; it is sadder that a mis
taken policy, a blinded national
conscience, should deny Ireland
home rule. A single act granting
this, which must some day pass,
would still all these plots and
leave both lands at peace. Eng
land can spot all its statute books
with coercion laws and dynamite
acts, but parliament will not by
these things prevent crime or
crush conspiracy. Justice will re
move these things as the mists van
ish before the sun, and justice
means to-day the simple, easy
remedy of home rule for Ireland.
It was believed, says the I3uf
falo Courier (Democratic), that
the New York state election of
last fall had taken President Ar
thur out of the list of- candidates
for the Republican presidential
nominations. That this was a mis.
take is already obvious. Mr. Ar
thur bv sheer luck rose within
three years from the uncomforta
ble situation of a displaced and
disgraced custom house officer to
the most powerful position in the
fOTernment. He is not an old
man and will make a struggle for
further political existence and
power a struggle in which he has

The Philadelphia Timesi anent
the dynamite scare in various
European countries at the present
moment, saj's: "Dynamite is
solidified nitroglycerine, and the
process of manufacture is rery
simple, the component parts being
common glycerine, nitric acid
and silica. As the ingredients
taken separately are useful
in ordinary manufactures and
two of them at least perfectly
harmless, it is difficult to see how
it is possible to prevent their sale.
As they are articles of common
traffic, any person with a very
slight knowledge of their chemi
cal qualities and a little skill in
mixing them can manufacture the
explosive in small quantities in
any ordiuary private room. It
will thus be seen how difficult it
will be to suppress the manufac
tures of the article in sufficient
quantities to be very destructive
in the hands of organized bands of
Nihilists or Socialists."
Mr. Lowell is right, says , the
Philadelphia Press, in saying that
assassination is not war and dyna
mite not the raw material of poli
cy, but he is not the right man to
say it. Mr. Lowell represents the
, government of the United States,
its laws and its official acts, and
however admirable his motives, he
has no right to travel outside of
his official duty to express public
nothing to lose and everything to
gain. His friends will claim that
in the coming national contest the
resources of the Republican party
will be taxed to the utmost and
that it -will not do to have the fed
eral administration indifferent or
lukewarm in the struggle. They
will claim that the country cannot
be carried without the state of
New York, and that if an Repub
lican can carry New York, Arthur,
the most expeiienced Republican
manager in this state, is the man.
At present there is no strong com
petitor for the Republican nomi
nation in the field. This, fact will
make Mr. Arthurs chances better
than they would otherwise be.
The president will find it a com
paratively easy matter to secure
delegates from the southern states
and the territories, and it would
be surprising if he would not do as
well in New York as Conkling did
in 187G. If Blaine is out of the
way he may secure delegations in
some of the western states without
much difficulty.
A New York special says: Jay
Gould has declared his intention
to retire from his active business
life on the completion of his steam
yacht Atalanta, built for his pro
jected tour around the world. His
son, George G. Gould, a young
man of 23 years, is to take his
place as a speculator, and Gould
himself will lead a private life.
Gould's fortune is carefully esti
mated in round numbers at 100,-
000,000, of which $20,000,000 is in
stock of the Western Union and
$20,000,000 in stock of the Mis
souri Pacific. In real estate he
has never put much money, con
sidering the size of his fortune.
His investments in this kind of
property altogether amount to
about $5,000,000. The remainder
of his wealth is in securities, main
ly in the shape of bonds of differ
ent railroad companies.
