ASTORIA, OREGON:
THURSDAY- APRIL 19, 1883
America and England".
It is a poor rule that will not
work both ways. The British
government thinks it right and
proper to make representations to
the American state department re
specting changes which the Brit
ish government thinks should be
made in American laws in order
to punish as crimes acts done in
the United States to promote
great changes in the political tie
which binds Ireland to the British
Crown. Very well! Is it not
time asks the World, to make
American counter "representa
tions" to England respecting the
long continuance of such a con
dition of affairs in Loudon and in
Dublin as is rapidly coming to hi
an international nuisance?
If there were any reasonable
hope that the governing classes in
England Liberals or Conserva
tives, "Whigs or Tories could
bring about peace and good gov
ernment in Ireland, the United
States might amicably agree to
put up a while longer with these
vexations and annoyances. But
there really seems to be no hope
of this. With few exceptions, the
party leaders in the House of
Commons talk and act about Irish
affairs more like a lot of self-sufficient,
arrogant, incapable and
panic-stricken landlords than like
thoughtful, able and deliberate
legislators. What would the
average Englishman say and do
about such a condition of things
in any other country as now exists
and has so lon? existed in Ireland?
What was there in the former con
dition of the Ionian Islands, or of
Austrian Italy, or of Naples, or
of the Papal States, or of Poland,
to justify the interference of the
British public, if not the British
government, a counterpart of
which cannot be found in the pres
ent relations between Ireland and
the British Crown? Have not the
United States as srood a right to
be impatient of the existing rela
tions between Ireland and Eng
land as they had between 1808
and 1876 to be impatient of the
relations between Cuba and Spain?
Spain, however, succeeded in re
storing order in Cuba. Is it not
likely that these "representations"
which Gladstone finds it necessery
to make at Washington may be
fore long put as severe a strain on
the diplomacy of two powerful
nations as did the Cuban discon
tent? Pointers.
Southern journals call Ben.
Butler "the last of the Puritans."
Freddie Gebhardt has four
racers in training besides Mrs.
Langtry.
A woman has been discovered
in New York who receives babies
that are not Avanted and sells them
at $5 or $10 apiece.
The debt of the United States
less cash in the treasury, is $1,
575,931,2SS. The decrease since
June 30th is nearly $112,000,000.
So many logs have been cut and
hauled this season in Maine that it
is thought the mills will not be
able to saw more than half of
them.
The Cincinnati Enquirer
(Democratic) boasts that "its party
cold nominate j-ellow dogs in that
city this spring and elect every
one of them by big majorities."
In New York 40,000 girls and
women support themselves by
their own labor, and S0,000 other
women maintain themselves and
their husbands by the. work of
their hands and brains.
Remark by Cardinal de Retz,
which is as true now as when it
was uttered: "A politician must
often change his opinion if he
wishes always to remain in the
same party.1'
It has been estimated that the
value of the products annually
drawn from our forests exceeds
$1,000,000,000, and of the vast im
ports of Great Britain two-thirds
are said to be of vegetable char
acter. -.
The Queen of England's crown
is made up of diamonds, rubies,
sapphires and emeralds set in a
silver and gold body. It weighs
39 ounces and 5 pennyweights
troy. In it there are 3,452 dia
monds, 273 pearls, 9 rubies, 17
asppfeires, and 21 emeralds.
The tendency of the time, as
the Milwaukee Sentinel interprets
it, is to the taxation of all enter
prises which are not exclusively
charitable. The public sentiment
in opposition to tax exemption
is growing stronger yearly, and we
may rather expect to see the tax
ation of property now exempt
than the further extension of the
privilege of exemption.
The Springfield Republican
urges the propriety of the adoption
by Massachusetts, with some
modification, of the English expe
dient of a permanent law office at
tached to the legislature, which
shall have the oversight of the
draft of all new legislation. All
private bills and matters affecting
private rights, especially in the
British parliament, are subject to
such scrutiny.
General J. W. Denver, who is
mentioned as apossible Democratic
candidate for president, was born
in Virginia, went to Ohio, mo ed
to Missouri, was a California pio
neer, killed his man in a duel,
went to congress, was appointed
governor of Kansas by Buchanan,
was made commissioner of Indian
affairs, had a Colorado town (which
became its capital) named after
him, is rich, has a rick father-in-law,
reads much history, and is
sixty-five years old.
In some reminiscences of Daniel
Boone by a writer in the Denver
Tribune- the following is said:
"When ho went back to his fami
ly in Virginia after roaming for
two or three years, he found a ba
by in the house. Mrs. Boone,
who had given him up for dead,
hastened to explain that it belong
ed to his brother, who had been
left in charge while Daniel, went
on his long hunt, and Daniel, glad
to see them all, made no fuss
about it, since it was a Boone
anyhow,' and he gathered up the
family, brother and all, and went
on to Kentucky."
The most remarkable hail storm
of the season is reported by the
Hawkinsvillc- (Ga.) Disjyalch, al
though it must be kept in mind
that the editor of that playful
sheet is never under oath while
writing. This hail storm hadeits
rise and fall.in Worth county, Ga.,
and stones of all sizes and shapes
imaginable fell. It is said that a
little boy found in his father's yard
after the storm had ceased a hail
stone that resembled a watch in
every particular, having a perfect
dial and the ring by which the
chain is attached, and it was 3:30
o'clock by the hands when the boy
picked it up. It is also stated
that another one was found in a
gentleman's yard that had the ap
pearance in every way of of a two-year-old
boy with a pistol in his
hand, and that the pistol actually
fired off and killed a fine fattening
hog that had sought refuge in a
fence corner near by.
Two years ago, according to
the Boston Herald, a newspaper
correspondent attempted to ex
plore a Florida jungle in which is
"De Debbil's Tar Kiln," a deep
hole in the ground from which
sulphurous vapors arise. Every
body in the neighborhood counted
him as good as lost, except a dark
eyed Tallahassee girl. In a week
he returned with scarce a rag to
his back, almost blind and nearly
dead from exhaustion. The negroes
were all afraid of him, believing
that no one could get out of there
except by express permisson of
"de ole bad man." The girl
nursed and cared for him until he
was able to return to his home in
New York, where he finally re
covered from the effects of the in
halations of sulphurous acid gas.
The same train that bore David
Davis to Fayetteville to be married
carried Thomas Hodson on a simi
lar mission to Palatka, where he
met and was united to his Talla
hassee girl in the same house
where she nursed him back to
life after his perilous adventure.
The N. Y. World thinks there
must be something wrong in
America when an Englishman can
buy cotton in Galveston, carry it
to England, manufacture it, bring
the fabric back to Galveston, pay
our enormous customs duties and
undersell a rival American fabric
in Texas?
Fishermen from Glouchester,
Mass., are about to send out a
committee of investigation to
Alaska, in reference to establish
ing a halibut fishery in that territory.
The skill of Chinese in drawing
plants as well as ladies' pedal ex
tremities is well known. It is
stated in a recent work on China
that the ladies of the "upper ten"
in the Celestial Empire wear in
their bosom Jittle fir trees, which
by a carefully adjusted system of
starvation have been reduced to
the size of button-hole flowers.
These remain fresh and evergreen
in their dwarf state for a number
of years, and an regarded us sym
bols of the perpetuity of love, to
express which they are used by
ladies of the highest rank.
