ASTORIA, OREGON:
SATURDAY-.. APRIL 14, 1BS3
A Change Probable.
There is a kind of anxiety and
uncertainty in the official life of
Washington now. The prospect
of a change of administration up
sets everything more or less, and
when the people who have been in
power twenty-two years begin to
think of stepping, down and out
they are like Charles Lamb, "stag
gered at the idea of another state
of existence." There is no longer
the easy confidence of a few years
back. The change is already an
ticipated by the Democratic con
gress which is coming and the
11,000 office-holders there, from
Mr. Frelinghuysen down to the
department messengers, all have a
little uncertain feeling at the back
of their necks. One remarkable
thing is heard the superior de
partment officers are all saying:
"Well, I hope I'll soon be out of
the treadmill," which means that
they are quietly making arrange
ments to leave the soft places
which when they eutered they ex
pected to fight for as long as they
could. The fighting day is past.
The civil service commission is
turning up and making vast prepa
rations for the overhauling of
everything. One good will be ac
complished if they will put a stop
to the ridiculous question asked
of applicants for clerkship. One
poor woman here was terrified
because she could not answer the
very first question put to her by the
examiners how far was the sun
from the earth. Another nearly
fainted because she did not know
the capital of Terra del Fucgo.
An Old Man's Belief
Have used Parker's Ginger Tonic
for my bad cough and hemmorrliage I
had twenty-five yeara. 1 feel like an
other man sinco I used it. I am CG
years past. Believe it sure to cure
younger persons. A. Orner, High
spire, Pa.
Why are we sick? Because we al
low the Liver, the Bowels, and the
Kidneys, these great organs, to be
come clogged or torpid, and poisonous
humors are forced into the blood.
Expel them by using Wm. Pftinder's
