ASTORIA, OREGON:
SATURDAY APRIL 14, 18S3
Just for Instance.
Mr. Henry Villard arrives at
Astoria this morning. :Tis now
over eighteen months since the
seaport of Oregon -was honored by
a visit from the head of the vast
system of railroads that is devel
oping this great northwest at such
a rate. The Astoria of to-day is
far ahead in wealth and size of the
Astoria of eighteen months ago.
The city that Mr. Villard's com
pany ignores by omitting its name
from its maps is, outside of Port
land, the most prosperous city in
the Northwest. Astoria welcomes
Mr. Villard; is glad that he is
here, and hopes that his stay on
this northwest coast will be a
source of satisfaction to himself
and of profit to the several com
munities whose interests he has so
much to do with.
When C. P. Huntington, vice
president of the Central Pacific
Railroad company, was several
years ago looking through the
Willamette valley for a railroad
route, he turned to his companion
and asked about a route through
the Coast Range to Astoria, and
remarked that if there were a good
route to Astoria that Astoria
should be the great market for the
wheat of the Willamette valley,
and that a railroad would be built
there.
But great railroad men are like
ourselves, mortal and fallible.
Several years have passed since
Mr. Huntington's visit to the Wil
lamette valley, and there is no
railraad to Astoria yet, notwith
standing a large land grant of
more value than the proposed rail
road was given to aid in building
the railroad. Perhaps if Mr.
Huntington had been operating in
Oregon he would have carried out
that idea of building to Astoria,
but more likely he would have
dono as Mr. Villard, who said in
his Portland speech when he was
there last, that "he meant Port
land to be the western terminus"
of his railroad system.
Subsequent events show that
Mr. Villard meant what he said
then. Sometimes it happens,
however, that presidents of great
railroad corporations do not al
ways have things happen just to
suit them. So it was with Gov.
Stanford, of California, who said
in a public speech at Sacramento
that he meant that city should be
the great terminus of the Central
Pacific railroad. Years have
rolled on since and we find San
Francisco slightly larger than
Sacramento, and Gov. Stanford
has bowed to the inevitable and
built himself a neat little cottage
in the city by the sea costing him
half a million of dollars.
Astoria is, however, entirely in
dependent of Mr. Villard or his
plans. Should he see fit to do
otherwise than ignore the only
seaport that Oregon possesses,
wo shall not feel at all disap
pointed. But the railroad or Mr.
Villard has more need for Astoria
than Astoria has for the railroad.
Our sources of wealth and pro
gress are independent of parallel
rails, and while they would aug
ment, their absence cau no more
than temporarily retard the suc
cessful future that awaits our citv.
Pointers.
A bill has passed the "Wisconsin
assembly to imprison txanips in
the state prison for not less than
six months nor more than one
year.
A Vermont judge has ruled that
where liquor is sent into the state
marked C. O. D., the sale is made
in the state, and hence is contrary
to law.
The recent general assembly of
North Carolina voted a pension of
$75 a year to all the maimed or
disabled ex-confederate soldiers
of that stale.
Six detectives attended the Van
derbilt ball in New York. The
great railroad king did not, of
course suspect that he had invited
Jiny thieves.
The railroad people and specu
lators having an interest in the
Yellowstone National Park hope
mat, iuu preaiuent win visit
"Wonderland" this summer.
Dundee merchants, many of
whom carry standing credit in the
United States of from $75,000 to
$100,000, siy they have mucb. few
er bad debts in the United States
ih&nJn Europe.
Edward Atkinson, illustrating
the advantage of machinery, says
it would require 16,000,000 per
sons, using the spinning-wheel and
hand-loom of less than a century
ago to make the cotton cloth used
by our people, which is now manu
factured by 160,000.
A lawsuit to determine the
ownership of a large meteoric
stone which recently fell in Em
met, Iowa, is about to be tried.
The owner of the land on which it
fell claims that it is his for that
reason, and the man who saw it
fall and dup- it up believes the
court will hold his title perfect.
The stone has considerable value
for it weighs 600 pounds.
It is said that Roscoe Conkling
happened in the library of con
gress, a few days ago, when Mr.
Blaine was working away in a side
alcove, Tjut the librarian answered
his questions quickly, produced
the works of reference, rod placed !
the New York lawyer at a safe j
distance from his old antagonist.
The two men sat within twenty
feet of one another for nearly an
hour, and neither apparently knew
of the other's proximity.
Hon. John C. Knox of Phila
delphia, who was the democratic
leader in the Penns3rlvania legis
lature of 184:6 and in 1853, and
was elected Supreme Judge by
40,000 majority, is passing the
evening of his life in the Insane
Asylum at Harrisburg, where he
has been since 1S77. Says the
Philadelphia Times: "He was
one of the most accomplished and
gonial of men, and the evening of
his once useful and promising life
is unspeakably sad."
At a recent meeting of "origi
nal Mormons" at Kirkland, Ohio,
some strong speeches were made.
Rev. C. Gurley, speaking of the
Utah Mormons or Brighamites,
said: "They are dissenters from
the original church. The people
of Utah, men and women, have
practiced the meanest things that
ever disgraced the world. I am
sorry that such a terrible thing as
polygamy exists. Jt is a curse as
black as Egyptian darkness. I
do not take stock in any religious
followers who do not live in a
country to obey its laws. I would
rather have my child a rank infi
del than a Utah Mormon practis
ing polygamy. We hope the
United States government will
draw a distinction between the
Reorganized church of Latter Day
Saints and those latter day devils
at Utah.
