WEDNESDAY. APRIL 11, 18S3
An Immigration "Boom."
A San Francisco dispatch of the
9th, says: The immigrant boom
to the northwest is in its height.
Despite the liberal offers made by
land agents here, but few immi
grants arriving bj way of the
Central and Southern Pacific rail
road ars intending to settle perma
nently in this state. It is a notice
able fact that river three-fourths of
them shortly after their arrival
here find their way to Oregon and
Washington territory. As a rule
they come provided with through
tickets and the favorite way to ob
tain information about the coun
try is to send an advance agent,
whose duty it is to report upon
the most important features of the
country and its adaptability to
their purposes. Under the
management of II. Widdick, of
Colorado, a company of 250
immigrants, all practical German
fanners, was organized and
left Denver 1-i days ago en route
to "Washington Territory. They
leave to-morrow morning on the
sound steamer and propose to set
tle in Snohomish, near the river of
that name, where also they propose
to establish the nucleus of a thriv
ing town. Some Canadians leave
by the same steamer for Yale, un
der contract with the Canadian
Pacific. In addition to the above,
a large number of immigrants will
start for Seattle and western Ore
gon during the latter portion of
next week.
