Capital and Labor.
TnE antagonisms that have re
sulted from the relationship capi
tal and labor bear to each other
have been a most disturbing ele
ment in the world's history. The
breaches seem to grow wider as
the "world grows older, and for
reasons that fall far short o that
justness which should govern the
entire relationship. It is, however,
a plain truth that this discontent
and often riotous disposition comes
from a dissatisfied element of the
unthrifty class, who are forever
agitating the disparity that exists
between the idle and the industri
ous. Those who try to argue that
there is any necessary antagonism
between capital and labor, says
the iV. Y. Economist, are wide of
the mark. In this free country
every man who labors, may, unless
orertaken by sickness or some in
evitable calamity, if he has thrift
and self denial, accumulate a sur
plus and thus becomes a capitalist.
It is generally by self-denial that
the great fortunes in this country
have been given their first start.
As money begets money, those,
who in the first place were fortu
nate enough to possess the strength
of mind requisite rigidly to deny
themselves some luxury that they
could dispense with, soon found
themselves in possession of a
small surplus, which they dili
gently invested until its propor
tions increased in geometrical
progression. It is a satisfactory
thought that so many young men
have, by diligence and thrift,
managed year by year, to lay up
some of their earnings, so that
alter years of diligence and faith
ful labor, they have become in
their own way capitalists, aud
have been able to make a profit as
the employer of other men's labor
as well as their own. Their ac
cumulated savings are beneficial
to the whole community, and to
none more so than to thoso who
labor for wages; for if capital did
not exist there would be no
wages, and men would have
to return to the semi-savage
state, where eacii man
labored for himself, aud the gi
gantic enterprises which the world
has seen would cease to be under
taken. Capital becomes the enemy
of labor, when the capitalist refus-
es to dse it himself, or lend it to
those who have enterprise and
ability to embark in legitimate
employments. The old farmer
who buries his money in the
ground, or the miser who hoards it
up in an old stocking, is an ene
my of labor and is justly entitled
to our dislike and contempt but
the man of brains and energy, who
employs his capital in enterprises
large or small as his means justify,
where he can give remunerative
employment to his fellow men, is
the friend of labor, and no part of
the community has so great an in
terest in the abundance, freedom
and security of capital as those
who work for wajres.
Irrepressible Conflict.
England virtually says to the
Irish people, and has been saying
it for years by acts far more po
tential than words ever were,
"emigrate or starve." This policy
has practically transferred the ma
jor part of Ireland, minus the soil,
to the United States. There is
says the JPost, more of Ireland in
America than in Europe, for that
portion which has come here has a
better development, mentally and
physically, than the part left on
the "old sod " Forced from the
home they loved, and which, but
for cruel oppression, they would
not have left, the Irish in the
United States naturally hate the
British government, and it is not
unnatural that their hatred ex
tends to those portions of the peo
ple of Great Britain who have sus
tained the oppressive policy of
that government. England should
understand that the Ireland in
America can no more be prevent
ed from crying out against her
than the Ireland on the other side.
This is a free country, and we give
great latitude to tongue and pen
and type. So does Great Britain
on the English side of the channel.
It is only in Ireland that she sets
aside the habeas corpus, abolishes
trial by jury, seizes and imprisons
without even so much formality as J
the preferring of charges asd.
tramples the inalienable rights of
freemen under the mailed heel of
brute power. "We can not and do
not want to prevent freedom ol
speech and of the press in this
country. We must insist that our
part of Ireland shall be free as the
English, Welsh and Scotch. Wo
must do all that a friendly nation
ought to do in preventing a few
of the wilder spirits from commit
ting improper acts. But England
must bear in mind that she is re
sponsible for the fact that so many
millions of our people hate her.
They would not now be our people
nor would they be hateis of Eng
land if they and their ancestors
could have had a chance in life on
the soil of Ireland,

It occurs to the Brooklyn Eagle
that the race of "born leaders" has
become extinct.
The movement to establish a
daily newspaper at New York in
the interests of the workingmen
of the country is understood to be
making favorable progress.
Dan Rice, the world-renowned
clown, delivered a temperance
lecture in New York last Monday
night. He admitted that he had
been a hard drinker all his life,
and that he had the delirium
tremens four times, but was now
a teetotaler.
A Canadian customs official re
cently decided that Painc's "Age
of Reason" and Voltaire's "Phi
losophies" were immoral literature,
and refused to pass them. The
consignee who had ordered the
volumes for his private library,
proposes to test the matter in the
courts.

York paper from London sajTs:

ally felt, but the public's fears are
recognized so far that the govern
ment will undoubtedly pass an
act increasing the penalties against
such offenders. At the police
court -where the four prisoners
were examined the public exhib
ited little interest, and there was
but a small attendance.
Among other literary celebrities
who have recently given their
views as to the effects of stimu
lants on their power to work and
the quality on their intellectual
products "Mark Twain" is reported
as saying that, in order to do his
best, he must smoke three hundred
cigars a month. Possibly Mr.
Clemens believes this. He may
have persuaded himself that
the daily consumption of ten
cigars and he uses strong ones
is absolutely necessary to stimu
late his brain up to its maximum
power for those quaint and curi
ous conceptions which are the
staple of his wit. But the readers
of the great humorist have regret
fully detected and reluctantly ad
mitted asteady decline of his mirth
provoking power.
