ASTORIA, OREGON:
FRIDAY APRIL 6, 1H63
.a. Big Planer.
A Maine paper says that in one
of the Bath ship yards is a planer,
said to be the largest in the
world. It is capable of working a
piece of timber CG feet long, five
feet wide and two and one-half
feet deep. The keel comes out of
the machine ready for laying on
the blocksand perfectly suiooth
and true on all sides. A beveling
saw is another capacious machine,
which turns out timber sawed at
any desired angle from the hori
zontal, and by it curved timbers
arid ship lcriies can be worked
true to the line. The steam
engine which runs these machines
runs also a bolt-cutting machine
which will nip ofT round iron of
any diameter up to two inches;
also a large and small circular saw,
a machine for making tree nails,
and in the finishing shop, a band
circular saw, a planer, molding
machine, and a plug and wedge
machine. The waste steam is
used in bending timber.
A bar of iron worth five dollars,
worked into horse-shoes, is worth
ten dollars and fifty cents; made
into needles, it is worth .three
hundred and fifty-five dollars;
made into pen-knife blades, it is
worth three thousand two hundred
and eighty-five dollars; made into
balance springs of watches, it is
worth two hundred and fifty thous
and dollars.
A bull in the old tariff is that "
CB
carefully required that animals
"imported for breeding purposes"
should be "live animals." The
new tariff strikes out "live," and
leaves that to be understood.
A circumstance with a very hap
py outcome was lately referred to
by the Brooklyn JEagle. It was
told bj' Mr. AV. A. Davenport, con.
nected with the house ofMessrs.But
ler, Pitken & Co., 47G Broadway,
New York,and concerned the mar
velous cure of Mr. EzraD. Clarkson,
near Newark, N. J., of a terrible
case of rheumatism, which other
remedies had failed even to alle
viate. He was on his way to a
hospital when Mr. Davenport met
him and induced him to try St.
Jacobs Oil, with the result named.

PLAIN
TRUTHS
The blood is the foundation of
life, it circiilates through, every part
of the body, and unless it is pure
and rich, good health is impossible.
If disease has entered the system
the only sure and quick way to drive
it out is to purify and enrich the
blood.
These simple facts are well
known, and the highest medical
authorities agree that nothing but
iron will restore the blood to its
natural condition; and also that
all the iron preparations hitherto
made blacken the teeth, cause, head
ache, and are otherwise injurious.
Brown's Iron Bitters will thor
oughly and quickly assimilate with,
the blood, purifying and strengthen
ing it, and thus drive disease from
any part of the system, and it will
not blacken the teeth, cause head
ache or constipation, and is posi
tively not injurious.

Gents: Upon the recommenda
tion of a friend I tried Brown's
Iron Bitteks as a tonic and re
storative for my dauchter, whoa
I was thoroughly convinced was
casting away vrnh Consumption.
Having lost three daughters by the
terrible disease, tinder the care of
eminent physicians, I was loth to
believe that anything could arresr
the progress of the disease, but, to
my great surprise, before my daugb
ter had taken one bottle of Br.owjr
Iron Bitters, she began to mend
and now is quite restored to former
health, A fifth daughter began to
show signs of Consumption, and
when the physician was consulted
lie quickly said "Tonics wercre-
auired ;" and when informed that
le elder sister was taking Brown's
Iron Bitters, responded "that is
a good toalc, take it." -
Adorasi Phelps.
