ASTORIA, OREGON:
NEW TO-DAY.
FRIDAY APRIL C, 1SS3
The Coming Issue.
The issue in the next presi
dential campaign, says the Re
publican Newark Advertiser, must
be on the Republican side a stout
defense of the theory and prac
tice of protection. On the Demo- j
cratic side it must be a "tariff
for revenue only" a straight tax
without regard to an Ameriean
interest. This is only a material
question, but it involves the busi
ness, 'the comfort of the whole
people and the credit of the nation
and is quite impotant enough to
form a dividing line.
The Cincinnati Gazette, 'another
republican paper says when we al
low that free trade is beneficial
over a continent 5,000 miles across
and 2,000 miles up and down, we
put into the hands ofhe free
traders an argument which they
use with destructive effect. The
internal trade is more than ten
times the foreign trade. "When
we protest against this, and let
that go free, we cling to the tail
after we have let go the hide. If
it is a constitutional principle, how
can we oppose free trade with Ca
nada? The vain sentiment of
pride in territorial bigness must not
be permitted to impoverish us by
a beautiful trade. Nor is a divis
ion of the nation absolutely neces
sary to the higher application of
the protective principle; for by the
rescinding of a restrictive clause
in the constitution the several
states may multiply their wealth
by protecting against one an
other, while holding to the politi
cal union for the general defense.

Cooper died in New
York City last "Wednesday, at the
advanced age of ninny-two. Dur
ing his long life he was a living
exemplification of what industry,
courage and perseverance can ac
complish. Born amid the most
unpromising surroundings he
steadily prospered and was never
happier than when helping others.
He made a vast amount of monP3T
and wisely bestowed considerable
of it in judicious aid to his felloxv
citizens. He was a geniut, and
built the first locomotive engine in
America, fifty years ago. For
half a century his name has been
prominent for goodness and gen
erosity, for courage and mental
activity, and probably no man
could have died that will meet
with moro universal and well de
served panegyric than the great
and good man who closed a well
spent life labt Wednesday. Such
a man is an honor to the race.
