ASTORIA, OREGON:
THURSDAY APRIL 5, 18S3
Whither.
"Ben Hill has ;onc to the undis
covered country. Whether his
journey thither was but one step
across an irapreceptible frontier,or
whether an interminable ocean,
black, unfluctuating and voiceless,
stretches between these earthly
coasts and those invisible shores
re do not know. "Whether on
that August morning, after death,
he saw a more glorious sun rise
with unimaginable splendor above
a celestial horizon, or whether his
apathetic and unconscious ashes
sleep in cold obstruction and in
sensible oblivion we do not
know. "Whether his strong and
subtile energies found instant
exercise in other form, whether
his dexterous and disciplined
x&i;uiMtt are now contenuinjr in a
higher senate than ours for supre
macy, or whether his powers were
dissipated and dispersed with his
parting breath we do not know.
Whether his passions, ambitions,
and affections still sway, attract
and impel, whether he yet remem
bers us as wc remember him we
do not know. These are the insol
uble problems of mortal life and
human destinj-, which prompted the
troubled patriarch to ask that
momentous question for which the
centuries have given no answer,
"If a man die, shall he liveaain?"
Every man is the centre of a circle
whose fatal circumference he can
not pass. Within its narrow con
fines he is potential, beyond it he
perishes; and if mortality is a
splendid but delusive dream, if the
incompleteness of every career
even the longest and most fortu
nate, be not supplemented and
perfected after 'its termination
here, then he who dreads to die
should fear to live, for 'life is a
tragedy more desolate and inex
plicable than death." Senator
Ingalls on the death of Senator
Hill.

TRUTHS
The blood is the foundation of
life, it circulates through every part
of the body, and unless it is pure
and rich, good health is impossible.
If disease has entered the system
the only sure and quick way to drive
it out is to purify and enrich" the
blood.
These simple facts are well
known, and the highest medical
authorities agree that nothing but
iron will restore the blood to its
natural condition; and also that
all the iron preparations hitherto
made blacken the teeth, cause head
ache, and are otherwise injurious.
Brown's Iron Bitters will thor
oughly and quickly assimilate with
the blood, purifying and strengthen
ing it, and thus drivedisease from
any part of the system, and it will
not blacken the teeth, cause head
ache or constipation, and is posi
tively not injunous.

Gents: Upon the reeotntnenda
tioa or a head I tried Bbown's
Ikoh Bitters as a tonic and re
storative for my daughter, uhon
I was thoroughly convinced was
wasting away with Consumption.
Having lost three daughters by the
terrible disease under the care cf
eminent physicians, I was loth to
believe that'anything could arrest
the progress of the disease, but, to
my great surprise, before my daugb
ter had taken one bottle of Bcown
Iron Bitters, she began to mead
and sow is quite restored to former
health. A fifth daughter began to
show signs of Consumption, and
when the physician was consulted
he quickly said "Tonics were re-
Suired;" and when informed that
jc elder sister was taking Brown's
Iron Bitters? responded "that is
a good tonic) take it."
