ASTORIA, OREGON:
WEDNESDAY APRIL 4, 18S3
There seems to be just now a
general movement "all along the
line" in the way of changing the
face of nature for the more conve
nient arrangement of water waj's
for commercial traSc. The latest
proposition is nothing less than
the separation of England and
Scotland by a "water way from the
Solway Firth to the river Tyne.
An engineer is at present working
on the surveys, and estimates are
promised for . early publication.
This canal would have a length of
only eighty miles, or twenty miles
less than the Suez. It would, of
course, afford a very convenient
short cut across the country for
ocean steamers. Some forty years
ago a scheme of the same kind
was talked of.
The total number of manufac
turing establishments in the
united estates is zod,so;s, witti a
capital of $2,790,272,005. These
industries employ 2,73S,S95 hands,
two million of which are male
adults. The wages paid is $974,
953,795. The value of material
used is 13,390,823,4.49 producing
$5,300,579,191. This leaves a
clear profit to capital, after wages
and material are paid for, of $1,
024,S02,S4:7, or 4.3 -per cent, on
capital invested. The average
weekty wages of workmen is 345,
less than one dollar per day. That
is what is styled "protection of
American labor."
Kentucky still retains the pro
vision that "no person while he
continues to exercise the functions
of the clergy, priest or teacher of
any religious persuasion, society
or sect shall be eligible to the
general Assembly."
The complaint was rheumatism,
wherewith Mr. J. Y. Walker, of
"Waterloo Ind., suffered for fifteen
years; after trying a great many
remedies without being relieved,he
was finally cured by St Jacobs
Oil. He says he feels like a new
man.
Fancv soans and norfumerv of all
kinds can be found at J. TV. Conn's drug
store, uppusue ucciuem uoiei.
For Dyspepsia andLivcr Complaint,
you have a printed guarantee on every
bottle of Shiloh's Vitalizer. It never
fails to cure. Sold by W. E. Dement.
Physicians say it conibii.es all the
desiderata of every ferruginous tonic
prescribed by every school of medi
cine. Brown's Iron Bitters.
If not? Why not? Use the Great
OREGON BLOOD PURIFIER, an
appetizer, liver-regulator, and a sure
cure for your impure blood. It makes
the skin smooth, soft and fresh: the
eyes bright and sparkling; the brain
clear; the cheeks plump and rosy; the
breath pure and sweet, and good cir
culation promotes vigor to the whole
system. Ask your druggist fur it.

The blood is the foundation of
life, it circulates through every part
of the body, and unless it is pure
and rich, good health is impossible.
If disease has entered the system
the only sure and quick way to drive
it out is to purify and enrich the
blood.
These simple facts are well
known, and the highest medical
authorities agree that nothing but
iron will restore the blood to its
natural condition; and also that
all the iron preparations hitherto
made blacken the teeth, cause head
ache, and are otherwise injurious.
Brown's Iron Bitters will thor
oughly and quickly assimilate with
the blood, purifying and strengthen
ing it, and thus dnve disease from
any part of the system, and it will
not blacken the teeth, cause head
ache or constipation, and is posi
tively not injurious.

I was thoroughly convinced was
wasting away with Consumption.
Having lost three daughters by the
terrible disease tinder the care or
eminent physicians, I was loth to
believe that anything could arrest
the progress of the disease, but, tr

xnd now is quite restored to former
health. , A fifth daughter began to
show signs of Consumption, and

he quickly said "Tonics werere-

ie elder sister was taking Brown's
Iron Bitters, responded "that is
a good tonic, take it."
