ments showing in how relatively a
poor condition the United States
stands as regards its merchant
marine. Prior to 1861, when the
war drove the Union flag from the
seas, and since when it has been
kept off the ocean by home legis
lation, the sails of American ship
ping thronged every commercial
harbor in the world. The race for
maritime supremac then was be
tween this country and Great
Britain, a race in which the latter
power looked like coming out
second best. To-day the com
merce of the United States is
carried in English, Scotch and
Irish bottoms, and there seems
little chance of a change for the
better. The reports of what is
beinj; done in British ship-building
yards and its comparison
with what is not being done in the
United States are enough to make
every American blush with shame.
The reports referred to show that
in 1SS2, while hardly a score of
ocean-going ships of any kind
were being built on this side of the
Atlantic, the British ship-building
interests were more prosperous
than ever before.
The year 1 881 was the greatest
for building iron and steel ships
that the British Isles had ever
known, but 1882 was still greater.
During that year, in nineteen ports
of the United Kingdom, nearly
800 ships with an aggregate ton
nage of 1,200,000 were built, being
an increase of one-fifth over the
construction of the previous year.
Of this enormous tonnage the ship
yards of the Clyde produced 391,-
034 tons and the Tyne, 20S,000
tons, and a remarkable fact is that
Belfast, which in 18S1 had only
built 13,893 tons, had grown in its
production to 58,120 tons, actu
ally launched, besides preparing a
ship of 4.700 ,tons which was
launched in January of this year.
An important point noted in
connection with this great; increase
of gross production is tlu size of
the individual vessels produced.
In commenting on this, the Satur
day Itevicic saj-s "the tendency
everywhere is becoming more
pronounced towards very large
vessels," and the reports show
the average tonnage of vessels
built on the Clyde has risen from
916 tons in 1878 to 1,347 tons last
year. On the "Wear it has risen
from 1,404 to 1,727 tons, and on
the Tyne from 1,075 to 1,753
tons. On the Clyde one vessel of
7,500 tons was built, and one of
5,600, while ships of 3,000 to 4,
000 tons were quite numerous.
The material of which nearly all
these marine monsters were built
was steel, wood only being used
for very small vessels, and for but
comparatively few of them.
The fact of this enormous in
crease points to another fact the
continued growth of the monopoly
of the carrying trade of the world,
now practically owned by Eng
land. "With the solitary exception
of the Egyptian war, which led to
a temporary demand on the part
of the government for large iron
and steel steam vessels, there was
nothing that occured to give any
apparent unusual stimulus to the
ship-building interest, and that de
mand was of such short duration
that it could have had no serious
effect in forcing the business out
of its normal course. The growth
seems to have been due entirely to
natural and commonplace causes.
The trade of the world is growing
annually with the increase of its
populations and of the facilities
for the interchange of its commo
dities, and the nation which is pre
pared to do the carrying trade the
cheapest and best will get the
trade. How enormously profitable
it is may be judged by brief re
flection on the figures above quoted
and by remembering that this kind
of work has been steadilv going on
for nearly a generation, and with
every indication of continuous in
crease for a generation to come.
There surely must be some huge
mistake in the policy of the United
States, or otherwise we should get
some share of the golden prize
this trade offers. "With all the
material here and the skill and
inventive genius enough to beat
- the world on every other point, it

Newspaper Directory, which is
now in press, it appears that the
newspapers and periodicals of all
kinds issued in the United States
and Territories now reach the im
posing total of 11,196. This is an
increase of 585 in twelve months.
Taking the states one by one, the
newspaper growth in some is very
considerable. The present total
in New York state, for instance,
is 1,396 a gain of SO in the past
year. The increase in Pennsj'l
vania is 48, the existing number
being 943. Nebraska's total grew
from 175 to 201, and Illinois' from
890 to 904. A year ago Massa
chusetts had 420 papers; now the
number is 43S. In Texas tin
new papers out numbered the sus
pensions by 8, and Ohio now has
738 papers instead of 692. The
most remarkable change has oc
cured in the Territories, in which
the daily papers have grown from
43 to 63, and the weeklies from
169 to 243 Dakota being the
chief arena of activity. The num
ber of monthlies throughout the
country grew from 976 to 1,034,
while the dailies leaped from 996
to 1,062. The figures given above
are exclusive of Canada, which
possesses a total of 606. It is in
teresting to note that the newly-
settled regions of the Canadian
north-west are productive of news
papers as well as of wheat, for the
number of journals issued in Man
