ASTORIA, OREGON:
SUNDAY.... APRIL 1, 1S83
Pointers.
There are 4,000,000 Methodists
in the United States.
A college is to be established at
Waitsburg, to be under the
care of the Presbyterian church of
the Pacific coast.
In a county in Nevada is a hill
of moving sand four miles long, a
mile wide and from 100 to 400
feet high. "Within a fewj'ears the
hill has travelled a mile,
Tiie skeleton of an enormous
animal has been found in Wyom
ing Territory. The jaw measures
eleven feet. This must be the
skeleton of the original mother-in-law.
A Washington paper says that
a Methodist conference will get
through with more business in a
week than congress or a state
legislature usually does in two
months.
A Kansas church deacon said in
prayer meeting: "Brethren and
sisters, let us pray for Gr. W.
Smith and make a better man of
him." G. W. Smith sued the
deacon for slander and was
awarded 500 by a jury.
The Rev. Talmage lectured in
New Orleans last week, and in
talking with a reporter said that
the changes in all phases of south
ern life since he visited the south
five years ago amount to almost a
revolution, and in some particulars
to a resurrection.
"When any man," says the
Georgetown (Col.) Courier," wheth
er from the New England states
or Texas, comes into the country
with two old steers and a brand
ing iron, and in six years owns one
of the largest herds in the Territo
ry, we honestly think there is
something wrong."
Artificial lightning is one of the
largest manufacturing interests in
the world. In a round sum there
is about 375,000,000 invested in
the manufacture of gas in the
United States, New Yrk city
alone having in the neighborhood
of 22,000,000 invested, and
Brooklyn city about 12,500,000.
Martin Luther's soul has gone
marching on in Germany during
the last four centuries. His jour
ney to Worms might perhaps have
been cheered if he could have
looked ahead and seen the Em
porer unveiling a statue in his
honor on the fourth century of his
birth on the 10th day of next
November.
The tallest electric mast in the
country has been erected in
Minneapolis, Minn. It is sur
mounted by eight lights, each with
4,000 candle-power. Tt lights up
the most dangerous portion of the
city, and anywhere within a radius
of one mile diffuses hirht enough
to enable one to tell the time at
night by his watch.
A gang of thieves has just been
broken up in Los Angeles, Cal.,
none of the members of which was
over fifteen years of age. The
leader of the gang was Nellie Di
vine, a bright little brunette of
thirteen years. She was one of
the smartest scholars in the schools,
and invariably took the prize of
fered by her teacher. During the
last three years tliey have stolen
thousands of dollars worth of
goods.
The Boston Advertiser gives
the following definition of an in
terview, and one which is correct
in every particular: "An inter
view is a modern invention good
naturedly adopted bT newspapers
in enable public men to put their
ideas before the people without
assuming the responsibility for
them, and in a form to be repudi
ated as the inaccurate work of the
reporter in cae the views do not
"take."
There arc eleven religious socie
ties in the new and lively city of
Winnipeg, Man., and their aggre
gate wealth is estimated at the
immense sum of 11,300,000. In the
early history of the country the
Hudson Bay company made grants
of land to the various churches.
Protestant and Catholic. These
lands were practically valueless
then. The Roman Catholic church
has been the most fortunate, hav
ing a title to lands now valued at
$10,000,000.
"Isn't it about time for the local
authorities to sell the mule used
to draw the town hearse and buy a
horse?" asks the editor of a
Tennessee paper. "Twice lately
he has balked and detained pro
cessions on bitterly cold days for
over an hour, and only last week
he kicked in the front ol the vehi
cle and seriously damaged the
corpse. People are beginning to
get enough of this sort of thing,
and if the authorities don't take
proper action a citizens' meeting
will be called."
A correspondent ol the Boston
Traveller says that the late A If.
Stephens told him that he had
sent letter after letter ro S. A.
Douglas advising him to come to
thesouth and deliversome speeches.
Not less than a dozen letters were
sent, but no answer came, and
at last Mr. Stephens sent a special
messenger. It was found that all
the letters had been withheld by
the postmaster, but the correspon
dent forgets to say at which end
of the route they were withheld.
The moral of the story lies just
here. Many fine things could be
said if the pro-slavery postmaster
kept back the letters, and others
not so fine might be worked out if
the presumably anti-slavery north
ern postmaster did the suppress
ing. Asa work of art the story is
defective. It points no moral and
seems hardly calculated to adorn a
tale. Perhaps it might have been
as well to publish it' a month or so
before Mr. Stephens died.
The sana-bag artist is the terror
of Chicago at present, and a news
paper of that city presents the fol
lowing figures to comfort the peo pee
ple: "There are in Chicago at
the present time about 275,000
male persons. Of these about
140,000 are of sand-bag age. Of
this 140,000 sand-bag contingent,
70,000 individuals are of a timid
nature and do not go out after
dark. There remains, therefore,
70,000 adult males liable to be
sand-bagged any night. But the
newspaper returns show that no
more than ten are sand-bagged
upon an one night, or seventy iu
a week. This amounts to 3,500 a
year. It will take, therefore,
twenty years before every man
will get his turn." Any man who
cannot take comfort from these
figures should move out of the
city.
