ASTORIA, OREGON:
SATURDAY MARCH 31, 18S3
Tho Columbia is booming.
Wm. Loeb arrived home yester
day from a business trip to San Fran
cisco. The JBcda has gone to sea.
Kate & Anna is in Baker's bay.
The
Tho
Ona goes down to-day.
Rev. Winfield Scott, D. D., will
lecture Sunday night, at the Baptist
church, n "The fast young man."
The Columbia came in at 6 yes
terday morning, 44 hours from San
Francisco. Tho State steams down
and out to-day.
A Koltner proprietor of the Port
land Standard, and a live newspaper
man, is in the city. Sir. 2oltner goes
to California on the State, to-day.
The S. F. Commercial News regrets
its inability to procure correct reports
from Oregon concerning salmon. The
salmon that will not rise to a fly is a
sty fish.
A considerable portion of the
force on the railroad front ha3 been
transferred to Portlaud, and will be
gin on the Portland and Kilama di
vision next week.
The Renfrewshire cleared yester
day morning and went to sea in the
afternoon. She carries out $92,G77
worth of flour and salmon. The Im
perial started up stream.
Budding trees, blooming flowers,
green lull sides, blue sky, balmy air,
swallows twittering and rows of baby
carriages in front of tho stores, aro
among the indications of spring.
M. P. Callender, who left here
some months ago for a vacation from
his arduous duties, as superintendent
of the Knappton mills, is at C003 Bay
inspecting milling prop&rty there.
Tho weekly item comes from
Jacksonville about chickens dissected
and found to have gold in their crops.
The Jacksonville poultry seema to
have caught on to the present rage for
"decorated interiors.''
"No, 1 haven't got a house yet, but
I heard yesterday of a lady who knew
of a party who said it was probable
that the family on the corner would
move if they could get lumber to
build elsewhere." Astoria Chorus.
The American ship Reaper, Bos
worth master, which left New York
at seven o'clock on the morning of
October 2, 1832, arrived in yesterday
afternoon, 179 days out. The C. S.
Hulbert is due from the same port.
A surprise party at the residence
of Mis3 Nellie Carnahan last evening
was an occasion of pleasure to the
large party of ladies and gentlemen
who took unceremonious possession
and thoroughly enjoyed themselves.
We regret to hear of the contin
ued illness of Capt. Davis, who is now
at the Occidental. The old injury to
his knee, received while coming
round tho Horn thirty years ago occa
sions great pain atfd may necessitate
an operation.
There will be a conclave of all the
Knight Templars in the United States
in San Francisco next summer, and
the S. F. hotel men are holding meet
ings and comparing notes, to find out
what tho Sir Knights will stand. It
is for all the world like the late tariff
commission.
Alex. P. Waugh, the versatile ad"
vanco agent for Mrs. Dr. Anna, M.
L. Potts, goes to San Francisco to-day,
en route for Australia. As all his
undertakings aro a success, wo expect
to hear of his winning tho same meed
of approval beneath the Southern
Cross, that he did on this northwest
ern tour.
The Swedish Evangelical Luther--an
congregation of Astoria, will have
its house of worship in upper Astoria,
.near plank road, dedicated next Sun
day, the 1st of April, at 11 a. it.
Hev. D. Carlson, missionary superin
tendent of Oregon, and Idaho, and
Rev. J. Pellier of San Francisco will
officiate. All are invited.
Archie Clark, tho unfortunate
young man who was shot by Charles
Anderson on last Sunday morning, is
lying in a very precarious condition at
the hospital. Blood poisoning has
made its appearance, and the chances
arc decidedly against his recovery
now. Still there is a little hope for
lura. His father, George Clark, of
Harding's, Clackamas county is with
him, and will give him everything he
needs. Standard.
Mrs. Potts lectured to a good audi
ence last evening on the circulation
of the blood, etc., and though it is
not a subject that admits of much
oratorical display yet the terso Eng
lish of tho speaker and the full knowl
edge of the matter which she evinced
made it at once interesting and in
structive. To-night the theme will be
Love, courtship and marriage an at
tractive topic. It is considered, to be
her best lecture, and those of our
readers who have not as yet been to
the Hall should not allow tho oppor
tanity to pass unimproved.
Two splendid front rooms, suitable
fc gentlemen only, or for office use.

COLUMBIA SALMON.
The Season of '83.
To day the close season on the Col
umbia river ends, and after twelve
o'clock to-n"ght it will belawful tocatch
the lordly fish whoso delicate flavor
and excellent quality makes it a staple
articlo of trade in tho markets of the
world. The canneries in Astoria and
vicinity io the number of thirty eight
have been in preparation for the last
ninotj' days, and by the latter end of
next week will be in trim to begin the
seasons work. Some few intend put
ling their boats in the water next
Monday, but by far the greater num
ber will defer active operations till the
run begins to come in in larger quan
tity. There arc salmon in the river,
and from the present stage of the wa
ter it would seem as though tho fish
would bo plenty in a short time. Last
season tho run did not begin till about
ths 25th of April; it is thought this
year that by the loth, the following
canueries
WILL BE IK OPICRATIOX
this season unless two or three of
them should be subsidized, which at
present docs not appear probable.
Aberdeen Packing Co. Ilwaco; John
West, Hungry Harbor; Jos. Hume,
Knappton; Pillar Rock Packing Co.;
J. G. Megler, BrookGeld; Goo. T.
Myers, Fisherton; Ocean Canning Co.,
Bay View; F. M. Warren, Cathlamet;
Hapgood & C, Waterford; Enreka
Packing Co., Eureka; Wm. Hume,
Eagle Cliff; James Williams, Tanzy
Point; Seaside Packing Co.; Wash
ington Packing Co. ; Uuion Packinc
Co. ; Cutting Packing Co. ; Sam El
more; The Astoria Packing Co.; J'
W. Hume, George Hume, John A.
Devlin, I. X. L. Co., White Star
Packing Co., Pacific Union Packing
Co., Occident Packing Co., Columbia
Canning Co., West Coast Packing Co.,
A. Booth & Co., Badollett & Co.,
Point Adani3 Packing Co., C. Tim
mins & Co., Fisherman's Packing Co.,
J. O. Ilanthorn & Co., S. D. Adair,
Anglo-American Packing Co., Thomes
& Knowles, Scandinavian Pack
ing Co., Astoria, 3. W. & V.
Cook, Clifton, and Jas. Quinn.
These canneries will put about 1,G00
boats in the water, more than there is
at present men to man. Probably by
the time the season is well aloug thero
will be plenty fishermen, but there are
not, to-day, any more than half the
number of men required. This doe3
not include the many private boats
along tho river, tho number of which
increases every year. As to tho
PEICE OF SALMOK
on tho Columbia, from the nature uf
affairs nothing can be positively stated.
Probably seventy-five cents a fish will
be the ruling rates throughout the
season, The tendency tins been
gradually upward sinco the business
began to assue promiuence. Fivq
weeks ago one prominent firm adver
tised that to fishermen owning their
own boats ninety cents per fish would
be paid. This announcement thd not
tend to settlo values to any ap
preciable extent. On tho Sacramento
river fishermen are being engaged this
season at fifty cents per fish. The
matter is simply one of supply and de
mand. With "twenty salmon to the
boat," and a steady run there would
be little difficulty in making terms.
It is one of these cases however where
"one's foresight is not equal to his
hindsight." Thero are
bit tew left
on the river, not over 25,000 cases,
and these are all sold, including 9,000
belonging to Balfour, Guthrio fc Co.,
on the O. R. & 2$. dock. A noticeable
foature in the year's business is the
comparatively small amount of this
season's pack that has been contracted
for, not over 05,000 or 70,000 cases,
out of a probable pack of half a mil
lion. Yesterday morning one of Gray's
wood teams got frightened and started
up street at a furious rate. As they
reached Chenamus street it seemed
as though they would run into a group
of children who stood terror stricken
not knowing which way to turn, when
Capt. G. Reed rushed forward, caught
them by the bridles, and though they
dragged him for somo distance, at
considerable personal risk he succeed
ed in stopping the runaways It was
a brave act, and thoroughly character
istic of the man.

Teachers Meeting.
A regular meeting of tho Astoria
teachers association was held at tho
Echool building yesterday afternoon,
much interest was manifested by all
present, most especially upon tho sub
ject of graded schools, and their needs,
and much was said in reference to tho
coming graded school of this city.
On motion it was decided to hold our
next regular meeting on Saturday,
April, 21, 1883, to givo teachers of
other schools a chance to attend. Tho
secretary was instructed to notify
teachers, by postal card, of the next
meeting, and request titcin to come
prepared to givo their methods of
teaching upon some certain subject.
It is hoped all will respond cheerfully
to any invitation thoy may receive.
