Two weeks ago Rev Dr. Mar
vin, of Portland, in a sermon on
newspapers, said:
"America has been called the
paradise of newspapers. In this
country the press is practically
free from all supervisions and re
straint. Public opinion, while it
hrJAa tko, pditnr to certain re
sponsibilities, gives him the
broadest liberties. He is theoret
ically amenable to the law forthe
way in which ho deals with private
characters, but in reality he is ab
solutely free and can do pretty
much as he pleases. And he may
be sure of success if his paper be
fresh and vigorous, for in the eye
of the average American dullness
is the unpardonable sin. Public
n;n;nn irimn it. nssnrts itself is
stronger than an' police force, and
men who defy law cower before
the voice of a united people.
When, therefor, the popular heart
is right the press is constrained to
observe at least the proprieties of
life. But the paper makes the
roader, and public opinion is often
only the editor's shadow. Here
lies the great difficulty in restrain
ing and controlling the press it
has a voice, and a very powerful
nn ton. in the onlv court that
ran adeauatelv deal with it
The newspaper enters thousands
of homes; we find it upon the
breakfast table; in the dining
room; the office; the shop; when
ever man goes the paper goes.
It is the only library multitudes
axror tliinlr of or care for. All
there is for them of art, culture,
history and literature flow into
their lives through the columns of
a daily newspaper. Men who
never enter a church read its re
ligious intelligence; who never go
abroad, read its foreign correspon
dence; who never open a volume
of history, read its editorials; who
know nothing of science, are
familiar with the reports of philoso
phical associations and ol con-

learning. "What a power is the
newspaper. Maiden and youth
linger over its stories and borrow
their early dreams irom its
columns; and the old man, his day
of labor ended, forgets the weari
ness of age while he reads jn his
paper of human effort and achieve
ment. The editor is a preacher
whose pulpit reaches around the

ervation were very restless last
week, and showed every evidence
of an early outbreak. They talked
of victory and said that a big
chief in Mexico said he would soon
be at San Carlos. A conrier states
Indians have been constantly pass
ing through the reservation ana
Juh's band in Sonora, carrying
communication and information.
The band raiding southeastern
Arizona is drawing near the reser
vation, and increasing in numbers
daily. As far as heard from 1
people have been murdered in
seven da's. Advices from Sonora
place the depredating band down
there at not less than 150, who are
being driven to the Arizona bor
ber by Mexican troops.
A Richmond New Mexico spec
ial says the Indians attacked the
camp of Palmer and Eraerick,
about 10 miles east of York's ranch
at 3 Q'clock on the 27th. Jack
Haynes and a stranger were kill
ed. John Emenck, missing, is
supposed to be killed. The other
men in the camp escaped to lorks
ranch. The military line between
this point, Port Bayard and Fort
Cummings is abandoned. It is
reported that a large band of In
dians are secreted in the moun
tains north ot York's ranch.

character of the editor; if he is not
at the post of duty and is not mak
ing his paper a safe and upright
publication he is an enemy of man
kind and should be treated accord
ingly-
