The Kate and Anna is lying in Baker's bay. The Itoseburg Plaindealcr thinks that"forty days without rain in the month of March is hard to beat.' It is, it is. The Edith, Captain Thos. Crang commander, is at the foot of Cass street fitting up for the season's work on the river. "Michael Strogoff" i3 being played in Portland. The advertise ments describe it as being "'an ava lanche of oriental splendor." The drought in California gives rise to newspaper discussion in our sister state regarding the building of reservoirs in the foothills to supply the parched and arid valleys. Better come to Oregon where kind nature sends copious rains and crop failures are unknown. Among the visitors to the Odd Fellows' building yesterday was a party of aristocratic Chinamen, and from the interest they manifested in the interior embellishment it is sur mised that some Chinese secret society contemplates building an edifice for a similar purpose. They .ire an imitative race. Tho funeral of the late Henry Youmans tork place from Grace c'aurch yesterdaj afternoon. The church was filled with friends of the deceased, and the procession was a long one, in which all tho members of the Astoria Longshoremen's associa tion joined in following the body to the grave. Mrs. M. L. Potts lectured on Physiology last evening to a well filled house. She is of pleasing presence on the stage and is evidently thoroughly conversant with the sub jects she discusses. This afternoon there will be another free lecture to ladies. To-morrow evening tho regular course begins. See adv. Seal fishing bids fair to be a pay ing business off Cape Flattery this j'ear, says the Port Townsend Argus, as the run is large and the number of schoon ers in that trade is limited. The largest catch so far this winter for a single trip was made by the scoohner Mist, Capt. Wm. Bogart twenty-nine seals in a da' and a half, with but two canoes. An action has been commenced in the circuit court of Marion county by Wm. Ruble, against Judge Prim, of Jackson county, growing out of mat ter published in a slip which was in serted in the brief of Judge Prim in tho case of Kelly vs. Ruble, wnicli has just been submitted to the su premo court. The damages are laid at $1,000. Tho papers were served on the ax-judge iust as he was start ing for home, Saturday afternoon. The case before Jhe supreme court is about the Coyote mining claim, which has been in litigation for several Years. Standard. J. DeCoursey, superintendent of construction on the Portland and Ka lami railroad, is at the Occidental. He is visiting the city, engaging men to send to work on the road. Two gangs of thirty-fivo men each were sent down Saturday and four were employed yesterday and will be dis patched on Thursday. This will make about 700 men. By the first of May Mr. DeCoursey thinks he will have 2,000 men at work, half of whom will bo placed at Columbia City and the other half at Rock Point. Ho will also have 150 teams at work. He says the road will be finished on schedule time. Hfevss. It was reported here laBt night that there had been an outbreak among tho Umatilla Indians, that four hundred had left tho reservation and had refused to return, and wero now on tho warpath. Passengers by last night's train which passed Willows, a little station 75 miles above The Dalles, at 10 o'clock in tho morning heard such rumors, but the action of the Indians was explained by the statement that they had gathered at the river to catch spring salmon which had just commenced to run, that sev eral got drunk, and raised considera ble disturbance. Ongonxan. The Chehalis Yidettc learns that there is considerable excitement in mining matters on tho north beach at Gray's Harbor. There is no question but that the black sand is very rich in gold, and the great desideratum has been to deriso some means of sepa rating and saving the precious metal, which is &o exceedingly fine, that heretofore no adequate process of sav ing it has been discovered. Mr. H. G. Blodgett, who resides upon the north beach, and has had considerable experience in mining, has now in vented and perfected a machine which promises to be a success in securing and saving tho gold on the beach, and in consequenco interest in tho black sand deposits there has greatly revived. Council Proceedings. Tho City council met in regular session last evening; Mayor Hahn m the chair; present, conncilmen Caso, Carruthers, Hume and Trenchard; absent, tCooper and Johns. In at tendance, F. C. Norris, auditor and clerk, C. W. Fulton, city attorney, C. W. Laughrey, chief of police. Minutes of the last regular meeting read and approved. A petition from two-thirds of tho property holders on Arch street concerning the grading and repairing of same was read and reported on favorably. Upon recon sideration of the same it was decided that it be laid on the table, and the following resolution offered by Coun cilman Case, was unanimously adopted. On motion the city attorney was re quested to givo a written opinion as to the legality of certain ordinances. On motion council adjourned to meet Saturday evening, the 31st inst. Cranberry Farm. Messrs. Williamson &JPhipp3, two gentlemen recently from Kansas, on Tuesday, purchased 350 acres of land, situated at Windy Cove, near Arca dia, in Mason county, belonging to A. H. Webster. On the tract is 75 acres of cranberry marsh, now having wild cranberries all over it, on which the above gentlemen intend to cultivate these berries. They will open and ditch tho marsh, and plant it in the best of New Jersey cranberries. It will cost several thousand dollars to do tho wosk, and will take several years before it can be completed and a crop secured. It is believed to bo one of the best bogs on the const, and there can be no doubt of its success. It is capablo of yiolding 20,000 barrels per year, which, at the present price, about $22.50 per barrel, would bring a fortune every season. Olympia Transcript. , Steamer Days. "The Oregon and Transcontinental railroad company," says the AUa of the 24th, "which has lately acquired tho business of the Oregon and Cali fornia railroad company, is one of tho VHlard enterprises formed to control tho Northern Pacific aud connecting roads and to build branches One of its mo3t recent acquisitions is the franchise and land grant of the Ore gon Central railroad, lying between Portland and Astoria. The latter rail v Jl was to have been built to Asto ria, at the mouth of the Columbia river, in Oregon, some six years since, but was not constructed within the time specified in the act of congress. However, as the Secretary of the In terior decided that the land grant re served to the railroad company was not forfeited until the congress of the United States should declare it for feited, the, Oregon & Transconti nental has taken steps toward build ing the road beforo congress shall have made such a declaration. The road will be built from Forest Grove some twenty-five miles west of Port land, on the Oregon central railroad, through the Nehalem valley to As toria. The lands to be earned by this road are now estimated to be of greater value ihan tho probable cost of the railroad. In order to save the lands from being declared forfeited this coming winter tho road will prob ably be built immediately. Astoria is a growing, enterprising little city, and will reap no small share of the boom that Oregon and Washington towns now enjoy. Tho interests of San Francisco would have been well subservod if the Central PaciGc had acquired the Oregon and California railroad in placo of permit ting it to go to the Oregon and trans continental, but at the present time the question with the California mer chant is, How arc we to retain our trade with Oregon aud California? Shall it be by a continuation of a railroad following tho coast northward to Astoria? The fact that from our peculiar situation Astoria's trade and commercial relations are intimately connected with San Francisco, renders pertinent the AUa's closing remark. Though very remote, the time will undoubted ly come when Astoria and San Fran cisco, the Boston and New York of the Pacific coast, will be connected by a direct line of railroad. That will be when at our wharves lie ship3 loading for Europe without the additional ex penso and delay of winding their tortuous way 100 miles inland. But many changes will take place in tho interim. In regard to tho building of the ruad from Forest Grove we are not at all sanguine as to its early completion. We think that the recent action of tho company m commencing a "survey bears about tho same relation to building the road that the taking out of first papors does to becoming a citizen. It is simply a declaration of intention. Hotel Arrivals. OCCIDENT. J A Brown, Portland; W A Batts, Portland; Jos Hume, Berkeley, Cal.; T Z Charman, Or.
