ASTORIA, OREGON:
TUESDAY MARCH 27, 1883
How It affects Seattle.
That the case of Astoria is not
an isolated one is illustrated by
the following from the JPost-Inlel-ligeiiccr:
Quite a discussion has lately
arisen over the question of the
Northern Pacific land grant,
whether k should be longer con
tinued or done away with. Our
people are interested to a certain
extent, and to that extent they
should be heard, and due respect
should be paid to what they say.
The company's grant extends over
almost every square mile in the
counties of King and Yakima, and
has so covered them a number of
years. The company had not
really earned an acre in either
county, and yet holds millions
within them more effectually than
if patented by the United States.
Their holding this land is a terri
ble bliglit upon both counties,
which have been immensely in
jured thereby. The only semblance
to a right to lands in King county
is acquired by the building
of a short railroad in Pierce
count' to some coal mines. That
road is not of one iota of benefit
to Kinor countv, while it is of
great benefit to Pierce. It would
not have been out of place,
perhaps, to donate lands in Pierce
county to aid the building of that
road, but to give the lands of
King countv for the purpose is as
bad as to compel the people of
Walla "Walla, Idaho or Oregon to
aid with their money and propertT
a local enterprise of this citv. If
the company went ahead with the
road and built it through King and
Yakima counties the objections to
their possession of the land gr.mt
would probably cease. But the
will not for several years.
Further, they stand in the way of
other companies who undoubt
edly would build were the North
ern Pacific out of the way; com
panies, too, that would build with
out the grant of an acre of land,
only too gladly. It is, even now,
Demg puonsneu oictucast over
the country that the company has
recently headed off, or bought off
the Oregon Short Line. If the
Northern Pacific does not want a
road here and will not build it,
why stand in the way of others
who do want and will build
it.' Under such circumstances
it illy becomes the corn-
path's friends hereabouts to
advocate the retention of its
grant in the two counties named.
If we remember aright, president
Yillard himself when in this city a
3'ear and a half ago, said that he
could not blame the people for
trying to get the grant abolished,
and further that the grant, grexit as
it is, and backed by all the traffic
to be obtained, was by no means a
sufficient object to induce the
company to build the road.
In the one case as in the other,
the road fehould be built or the
grant forfeited.
Pointers.
Chicago thirsts more than it
hungers having about 5,000
places where liquor is sold, with
aud without license, and 2,S00
stores for the supply of food.
A Philadelphia editor thinks the
enemies of General Grant oujjht
not to object to having him put on
the 2-cent postage-stamp, as that
is the only way ever contrived to
get him liclced.
Since the report came from
Maine that a pot of beans had ex
ploded,the life insurance agents of
Boston have been as busy as bees
writing policies. Even the Bos
ton Post man has taken out a pol
icy on his life for 17 50.
"When Uniontown, a suburb of
Washington D. C. was laid out,
twenty-five years ago, the owner
issued orders that no lot should
ever be allowed to become the
property of a negro. That man's
own former home, in the centre of
the town from which the colored
race was to be excluded, is now
owned and occupied by Frederick
Douglass.
In a Nevada mining town, now
deserted, which once had several
thousand inhabitants, Indians are
living in abandoned rows of good
brick" houses, which they have
adapted to their tastes as far as
possible by knocking out the doors
i&nd windows and punching holes
in the roofs.
The first instance where physi
cians are mentioned in the Bible
is IT. Chronicles .vi. 12. It is
not flattering to the faculty: "And
Asa, in the thirty-ninth year of his
reign, was diseased in his feet
until the disease was exceedingly
great; yet, in-" his disease, he
sought not the Lord but the physi
cians. And Asa slept with his
fathers."
For the first time in the history
of the city, a Chicago paper says,
the public schools were closed
this year on Good Friday.
Then followed a chapter of lamen
tations and the statement that
"half of the children -who attend
public schools do not know what
Good Friday is, and perhaps some
of them could not learn by asking
their parents." And they still
take up collections in the churches
of Chicago to aid the foreign mis
sionary work.
Timothy A. Howe, postmaster
general of the United States, died
at his home in Kenosha, "Wiscon
sin, on the 25th inst. He was
born in Maine, February 2i, 181G,
and after receiving an academic
education studied law and was
admited to the bar. He was a
member of the legislature of Maine
in 1845, and in the latter part of
that year he removed to "Wiscon
sin. He was elected to the United
States senate as a union-republican
in 1SG1, was re-elected to the hen
ate in JG7 and again in T3, during
these eighteen years holding im
portant committee positions and be
ing one of the most prominent and
influential members of that bod'.
He was tendered by President
Garfield an appointment as a mem
ber of the board of commissioners
sent by the United States to repre
sent this government in the in
ternational monetary congress at
Paris, his associates being ex
Senator Thurman, of Ohio, "Win.
Evarts, of New York. He re
mained abroad six months. Soon
after his return he began to be
prominently mentioned as a poj
isible member of President Arthur's
cabinet. In 18jl he was tendered
tha postmastership, which he ac
cepted, to the duties of which he has
since devoted his attention. He
strongly favored the reduction of
postage made by the last con
gress and has been largely instru
mental in securing improved mail
facilities throughout the country.
