St. Patrick, the apostle of Ire land, the son of a priest in North Britain, was stolen by pirates and carried to Ireland at the acre of sixteen, where he was sold as a slave and endured many hardships for six years. At the end of that time he found a piece of gold while plowing in a field and with it he purchased his freedom. lie hast ened home to his parents, who were overjoyed at seeing him. But his stay in a strange land had inspired him with profound pity for the poor people without the gospel; and urged by an inward voice and further inspired by a dream, in which he saw a man in Ireland beseeching him to come and dwell among them, ho left home and went to France, where he entered upon his preparation for holy orders. After he was or dained the pope appointed him bishop of Ireland. He set out for that place at once. He traveled through the cntue country and was received everywhere with de light. One day, however, while preaching to them of the doctrine of tfie Trinity, they failed to fol low his meaning and demanded explanation. He paused for a mo ment absorbed in thought, and then stooping down he plucked a leaf of shamrock and holding it up before them, bid them behold an emblem of the throe in one the illustrations of his words. The simple teaching delighted the peo ple, and from that time the sham rock became the national flower. Ve have witnessed the magical effect of St. Jacobs Oil in the most severe cases of rheumatism, and without hesitancy, pronounce it the greatest remedy in the market. The Cincinnati Enquirer mentions the following statement from Mr, Burton, of the great btove firm of Redway & Burton that city. "3Iy boy was afflicted with rheumatism badly; we had doctored him a great deal, but could find no cure; I saw St. Jacobs Oil advertised so much, heard so much of its good qualities that I at last de termined to try it. I must say that it beats all my doctoring hol low. Two bottles of St. Jacobs Oil cured my boy of the rheumatism when all other remedies which I had tried failed." For the creat OREGON BLOOD PUJtlFIER has cured me of my bo much 'Quinine habit and general" de bility, I have suffered so long. Yours trulv, Wm. Aklingtox. COMMERGEAND TRADE. PORT OF ASTORIA.
