ASTORIA, OREGON:
FRIDAY MARCH 23, 18h3
Busy Times.
A dispatch from San Francisco
yesterday saj's that both passen
gers and freight have been de
clined for the steamer to sail
Saturday. Orcgonian, 22.
Nothing illustrates the growth
of this country better than the
fact that a steamer such as arrives
here this morning is obliged to
leave freight and passengers at
San Francisco. A year ago a
steamer every five days was not
overburdened though it was a
matter of general comment that
the steamship companies were
doing "an enormous business."
Now, two steamers a week cannot
carry the men and material that
go to build up this northwest coast,
and we doubt not that when the
steamers leave for the Columbia
every three days, according to the
new schedule which goes into
effect in a week, their carrying
capacity will be as severely taxed.
From the southern coast and the
Mississippi valley, from the east
ern states and Canada, from far
off Europe, half way across the
globe come thousands seeking
homes and employment. It is
more than immigratien: it is an
exodus, and yet it does but indi
cate the westward rush that will
take place when the immigrant
may take railroad passage for
transit to this northwestern coast.
The news has gone abroad that
here is a great county, of inex
haustible resources and boundless
possibilities; of never failing field:,
and magnificent forests; where
sufficient moisture is assured to
guarantee a crop; where fierce
competition has not yet brought
to bitter fruit the blossoms borne
across the sea, and where honest
industry can safely count upon
abundant reward.
Nor need the' immigration be
confined to our own state or vicin
ity. To the north lies a noble em
pire. The counties of Pacific,
Wahkiakum and and Chelialis are
as rich in natural wealth and com
mercial situation as any of our
Western Oregon counties, and
the magnificent stretch of country
that is washed by Puget Sound is
further seat of empire.
