Of gto gilxj Qstoxteau ASTORIA, OREGON: THURSDAY MARCH 22, 1883 Pacific Currents. Dr. Thomas Antisdell, of "Washington, lectured before the New York Geographical society . on March 2th, on "The Currents of the Pacific Ocean." The object of the lecture, which was made apparent b a number of carefully drawn maps, was to show that the theory of an open polar sea result ing from warm currents flowing from the south was fallacious. Dr. Antisdell proved to the satisfac tion of the geographers present by showing urst that there were no warm currents in the Pacific ocean like the gulf stream of the Atlan tic. This was deducible from soundings and thermometrical observations made by navigators. The only regularly defined warm current is one extending from the equator northward along the Asiatic shore, where it loses itself on the cold currents from the north. This current exists only in warm weather, and is due mainly to the monsoons. A second reason is the formation of the sea-bottom at the Behring Straits. t is like the old-fashioned "peaked" rocf of a house, with a depth of 45 fathoms of wator covering it on the south side, 40 on the north and only 27 fathoms on the ridge of land extending between Asia and America at the narrowest point between the two countries This ridge, he claims, effectually prevents the flowing of a warm current to tho north of sufficient volumo to have any effect on Arc tic waters, and so makes an open polar sea an impossibility. Recommended to nic, the rcat OREGON BLOOD PURIFIER, I have obtained tho most satisfactory and quickest result fnuj the remedy ever know, and send m some more per Wells, Fargo & Co. for sick friends. 11. No Whiskey Brown's Iron Bitters is one of the very few tonic medicines that are not com posed mostly of alcohol or whiskey, thus becoming a fruitful source of intemper ance by promoting a desire for rum. Brown's Iron Bitters is guaranteed to be a non intoxicating stimulant, and it will, in nearly every case, take the place of all liquor, and at the same time abso lutely kill the desire for whiskey and other intoxi cating beverages. Rev. G. W. Rice, editor oi the American Christian F.c viezv, says of Brown's Iron Bitters: Cin.,0.,Nov. i6,iSSi. Gents: The foolish wast ing of Altai force in business, pleasure, and vicious indul gence of our people, makes your preparation a necessity: and if applied, will save bun dreds who resort to saloons for temporary recuperation. Brown's Iron Bitters has been thoroughly tested for dyspepsia, indigestion, biliousness, -weakness, debil ity, overwork, rheumatism, neuralgia, consumption, liver complaints, kidney troubles, &c, and it never fails to render speedy and permanent relief!
