The Railroad.
Ix yesterday morning's issue we
published a letter from the vice
president of the 0. & C. R. R. rel
ative to the surveying of the route
between here and Forest Grove.
Nothing definite can be deter
mined as to when the road will be
built. At considerable expense,
.some of our citizens had years ago
surveyed the route between here
and Forest .Grove, and that
survey, we are informed, is now in
the hands of the 0. & C. com
pany. Another element in the
case is the recent lease of the O.
& C. to the Oregon and Trans
continental. By the terms of that
agreement the O. & T. assume a
guarantee to build 125 miles of the
extension south from Roscburg,
receiving in payment therefor
7,400,000 mortgage bends: they
also lease the entire system of the
O. & C. R. R., for a" term of 00
years, paying proportionate rental
for that company's lines. We arc
of the opinion that this action will
tend more to hasten than retard
the building of the road to Asto
ria, but we do not think that any
thing will be done this season.
The great point with the railroad
managers is to get the main line
of the N. P. completed; the close
of this year will see continuous
railroad communication from Port
land to the east; the pressure oc
casioned by the present effort, be
ing thus removed will enable the
men who are back of all this to
branch out farther. "When the
road from Portland to Kalamu, is
finished it will require but little
additional incentive to push it
down the south bank of the Co
lumbia to Astoria, and the one
will brinir the other.
Jouuxals of Prusbian Poland
lament the rapidity with which
that country is becoming German
ized. Language, property and
population are all falling into the
control of the dominating Teutons.
The Polish peasantry is emi
grating, a large proportion coming
to the United States, and German
farmers and handicrafts men are
being sent for to take their places.
This together with the fact that
German is the official and judicial
language, is enough to crowd out
the original vernacular. As to the
landed estates of Jhe old Polish
nobility, they arc fast being
bought up by German capitalists.
During 1881. nearly 75,000 acres
of land were sold by Polish owners
to German purchasers. In the
past four years nearly 130,000
acres" went that way. Polish
patriots endeavor in vain to stem
the tide. The dream of the re
storation of the old nation is fast
fading.
The French provernment has de
cided upon the entire separation
between church and stale and
hereafter no national appropria
tion will be made for the main
tenance of any religious establish
ment. Up to the present time
the churches have received $14,
000,000 a year, which revenue is
now turned into other channels.
In the Scotch highlands forty
years ago the people were cleared
out to make way for sheep.' Ow
ing to competition from Australia,
wool became barely half what it
was, so that sheep have since had
to give way to deer.
The New York Tribune praises
the California proposed new law
respecting insane murderers, and
says its provisions remind one of
the darkejT's coon trap they are
designed to catch the animal "a
goin' and a corn-in."
It is said that fifty years ago
shad were so plentiful in the Sa
vannah river that fishermen ex
changed them for corn at the rate
of one ear of corn for ono shad.
Thirteen states hold elections
this year, eight choosing governors.

the matter is that he hasjis much to
do with keeping up the greenhouse
and looking after the fires as
