ASTORIA, OREGON:
TUESDAY MAKCII 20, 1SS3
NEW TO-DAY
Dry "Weather.
The present dry spell is some
thing phenomenal. Not for twen
ty years has there been such an
appearance of drought. For the
last six weeks there has been al
most uninterrupted sunshine, re
lieved only bj morning fogs and
occasional cloudiness at sunset.
It is usual to have white frosts a
forerunner of rain, but this season,
though the ground glitters with
frost in the early morning in the
interior, yet the la's continue
cloudless. In California it assumes
the" formidable appearance of a
drought, and grave fears are ex
pressed in regard to the possibility
of a crop. Here, in Oregon, such
a thing as the failure of a crop for
want of rain is unknown. The
present season of drought in our
sister state will have a tendency
as far as the lumber interest is
concerned, to check the demand
which the Sound mills and that at
Knappton can not supply. On
the ether hand, it is probable that
the dry weather will cause a good
many to come up here and thus
occasion a continuance of the
present extraordinary demand for
building material.
At the New York office of the
Oregon and Transcontinental
company it was stated that ad
vices last Saturday announced the
acceptance by the London stock
holders of a proposition made at
a meeting of the Oregon and
Transcontinental company, ic
garding the completion and lease
of the road. The Oregon and
California road is leased to the
Transcontinental compairy for 99
years. The rental i to be the
payment of interest charges of
320,000 per annum and 'So per
cent, of the gross earnings.
"Wukx J. U. Mitchell was de
feated last fall, the prophecy was
made that "the end is not yet."
A post mortem examination is now
beinir made of the latest official
appointment that of A. 13. Croas
man. sis Salem postmaster, as to
which side had the most "influ
ence" in procuring such appoint
ment. It makes it decidedly em
barrassing for Mr. Croasman, if he
happen to be a thin-skinned gentle
man who feels the little stings and
squibs that arc flung out.
