ASTORIA, OREGON:
FRIDAY..-.
.....ilARCHlG.1883
The "Guyascutns" Man.
Joe Meek, the old "Webfoot
pioneer, was about six feet one
inch highj and splendidly propor
tioned. He ivas the first white
man that ever crossed the Rocky
mountains in the winter. He did
that in 1847, when he carried the
news of the Cavuse outbreak in
Oregon and the "Whitman mas
sacre overland to Washington
Meek was the originator of the
"Guyascutus." His friends at the
trading-posts in Missouri used to
joke with him a good deal when
he came in with his load of furs,
and Joe resolved to get even with
them. So, next time he came in,
he told a wonueriui story ot a
strange, fierce animal, half grizzly,
half human, but he would let no
body see it until a certain day,
when he proposed to hold a public
exhibition. He rented an old log
church for the purpose, and when
the time came it was filled with
people at two bits a head. Joe
had a curtain fixed up, behind
which the audience could hear a
crreat rrowlinjr and rattliner of
chains, and his first performance
was to open all the doors and win
dows, telling the people that the
guyascutus was such a strong and!
terrible beast he could not guar- j
an tee that its chains would hold it.
therefore he thought it best to
provide for their escape at any
time. This done he went behind
the curtain, smeared his face and
dabbled his hair with blood, which
he had ready in a bucket, while
Ins assistant bejran a furious jrowl
ing and howling. Suddenly Joe
flew out from behind the curtain,
the very picture of fright, and
shouted, "Savo yourselves! The
Guyascutus lias broken loose."
Of course they lost no time in
"ettinji: out. nor did Joe in leaving1
the localitv.
