cj ri;iie jirtU 'Airtxirimi ASTORIA, OREGON: FRIDAY .... MAKCH lfi, lhS3 -Too fine. Ice cream. Straw hats. Flowers blossoming. Sixty-eight degrees in the shade. The shady side of the street in demand. - -The state crop of notaries public is unusually large this spring. Nathan Eaton, a pioneer of 1845, died at Elma, Chehalis county, W. T., last Friday. The Columbia is due this morn ing. She has 478 passengers and nearly 2,200 tons of freight. 2 Ross Bros, are busy with the Bcenery of their new theater. They expect to be ready about April 1st. We were pleased to hear last evening that T. P. Powers was much better and in a fair way for recovery. Tho fine weather has started every one who is fortunate enough to own a piece of ground, to gardening and trimming bushes. Nearly every community in Ore gon and Washington Territory, when voting upon school matters are in favor of good schoolhouses. The glass is being placed in the windows of the building opposite and the reflected rays of the afternoon sun gild our sanctum with a gclden glory.. A San Francisco dispatch says the ship Young America arrived in port Tuesday, from Oregon, with a rebel lious crew. The men refused to wash down the decks, and the officers had a lively lime keeping them at work. The appearance of small pox in Portland necessitates great care on tho part of Astorians. To get vac cinated becomes a duty. As in a good many other respects this community has been extremely fortunate in this regard, but situated as we are, all precaution is necessary. Outside of Portland wo know of no city in the northwest that will have a finer school building than Astoria. And we consider that this item, which will appear (as many others do frm our columns) in eastern journals, will be a splendid advertisement for our enterprising community. Where is there a busier city for its size than Astoria? The time has gone by when our seaport with all its 'pretentions" could bo sneered at. Men who were "ibing Astorians two years ago, are now coming here to get hold of property. And they aro wel come, unless they try to hold on to it to the detriment of the city's growth. Craigio Sharp, Jr., representing 27ie Wcsi Shore, is in tho city. That publication is a credit to the state and territory it advocates. By the hand some engravings and descriptive ar ticles it monthly lays before an ever widening circle of readers tho resources of our great northwest aro constantly made known to a largo class of intelli gent people. Seattle thinks it ought to have an immigration society. Our neighbors to the north have a fine country, al most as good a country to come to as ours in Western Oregon and South western Washington Territory. This summer will seo a large immigration to all parts of this great northwest, and the solitudes will hear the tread of pioneers, of nations yet to be; the first low rush of waves where soon shall roll the human sea. Some of the Portland papers are discussing the advisability of putting a tax on wheat shipped from that city to create a fund to keep the Willam ette open. Well, Astoria won't ob ject; it will simply hasten the inevita ble. The wheat must eet to the sea, and shippers will not stand much fur ther toll when the wheat can be loaded at Astoria, dispensing with the present pull-dog-pull-devil style of transfer ring from the wheat fields of the northwest to our ocean docks. The increasing freight and passen ger travel on the San Francisco steam ship line is taxing the four now em ployed to their utmost. So great is the pressuro upon the carrying capa city that it is likely another steamship will be required by the trade. Mean while the O. R. & N. Company are contemplating a change, by which the steamers shall make tho round trip in twelve days. They will make the time between the sailing days only three days at each port, instead of .three and four days, as it now is. Standard. Sound Sense. "It appears to us that many of tho newspapers commit a great error in their zeal to build up the town iu which they are published and in whose interest they labor. At this time, when there is a general boom all over the northwest, many of them base ther future upon their abilities to be little other places and stake their all upon securing the support given more successful rivals. They seem to have no other merit but the prospective railroads, and what they anticipate when completed to their doors. Towns along railroads have relied exclusively upon this factor of wealth, and the citizens settled down to await its ad vent. They have realized, as a rule their disappointment, and it has taken, in many instances, years to re cover the business activity which their respective places had before they be gan to look for railroads to build them up and make them rich. No town can be built upon the ruins of an other unless it possesses superior ad vantages and business enterprise, and towns will grow in spite of the opposi tion of rivals which have no bet ter claim than simply railroad ter minal facilities or the abuse of mic cessful neighbors. Of course we do not wish to be understood as placing too small a value upon the railroad as auxilaries to the advancement of any town, but railroads alone cannot ac complish the building up of largo cities where there is nothing to sup port tho roads or tho people who in habit the towns. It takes business to support the towns and it requires com merce to sustain tho railroads. If tho former is the foundation of a town, the railroads will help its sliaro in de veloping more business and add its mite to the progress of the place." The above is from the Portland Standard, and is just about the truth. Railroads will not make a place; there must be other factors of prosperity. In the case of Astoria, our unrivaled location on a peninsula at the gate way of the Columbia, similar to the great metropolis New York, our fish eries, commerce, lumber and other resources are tho elements of our prosperity. When a railroad comes here as an ocean terminus it will of course help, but the railroad needs Astoria, more than Astoria needs the railroad. Canner's Meeting. At a recent meeting of canncrs of Columbia river salmon held in this city, S. Elmore was elected chairman, and J. G. Megler, of Brookfield, W. T., secretary. About twenty-five can neries were represented. The first matter discussed was the question of lacquer, a recent clause in insurance policies applj'ing especially to lacquer made of products of petroleum. It was finally decided by vote that each cannery send this season five cases, unlacquered, to Liverpool, as an ex periment, upon which futuro action should be based. In referenco to reclamation, etc., it was thought feas ible to havo a special agent in En gland whose solo duty it would bo to look after the interests of Columbia river salmon packers, attend to claims for reclamation, etc., and be their ac credited agent. A committee was ap pointed consisting of Messrs. Han thorn, Dealey and Spexarth to can vass tho proposition. A further topic of discussion was the idea of forming an association for mutual benefit and assistance, on which point pending definite action the meeting adjourned, to meet at the call of the chair. Capt. John C. Vhite, lst Artillery, stationed at Fort Stevens, has obtained a transfer from tho Artillery to the 6th Cavalry. One of the pilots who came in from the offing yesterday afternoon in forms us that thirty-five miles outside the bar at noon it was clear and cloud less. It is about time for the Impe rial to heave in sight Tho Reaper is long overdue. General W. T. Sherman ia ex pected to visit the department of the Columbia this summer, and make a general tour of-all the military posts. Wo have his special assurance that he- wants no band to play "Starching Through Georgia" upon his arrival. George Hill and John Stephans were again arrested last Wednesday night, and gave bonds in $100 each for their appearance before the police court. Yesterday when the judge took his seat they were on hand; District Attorney Fulton refused to make any complaint on the ground that a similar case was decided the day before by the judge discharging Stephans. His honor instructed policeman Hunter, who made the arrest, to report to the city council regarding the matter, and ordered that the bonds be continued. How Candor Pays. "We had better understand each other," he said deprecatingly, as he sauntered into the ciitorial room, "beforo we begin. I'm a book agent." Unmindful of the groans that met this statement, he wept en: "I'm not a white-haired philan thropist from New Haven, who has come here through sympathy for your stricken people. I'm a fair, square, bald-headed book agent." Encouraged by the reception of this frank avowal he took a seat, and dropped his feet in a waste-basket and said: "I'm not a retired clergyman who seeks to scatter religious instruction while he builds up his worn out frame in your balmy clime. I'm not an apostle of art who has consented to seek your benighted region, and edu cate your people by parting with a few picture book3 in parts. I'm not a temperance lecturer from Bangor who pays expenses by dispensing of litera ture on commission while he regener ates the rum-sucker. I'm an unmod- fied book-agent, with none of the cor ners rounded, running on cheek in pursuit of tin." "Here's candor at least," remarked the young man who writes the puffs on hardware stores. "Yes; candor at best. I'm not a gilded sham. You don't pick mo up for a prince in disguise or art or mor tality going incog. I do not fly the skull and crossbones hid behind a hol iday flag till I've grappled and boarded you. I've got tho regular old death's head nailed to the mast, and I'm a privateer from keel to center-board. and if you don't want that sort of company blow me out of the water. He had the whole force on deck at this point. "I've got no ofT-hand preamble to my bloody work. I do not lead you through the flowery paths of ease to where I've got the trap spruug. I do not beguile with anecdote, inspire with eloquence, soothe with persuasion or pique with local gossip. I was not directed to you as a leader of culture or a person who'd be likely to buy. I won't show you a list of high-toned decoys who have put their names down to get rid of me and draw you in. I don't show tho work I'm sell ing, and I've never been able to learn the idiot's soliloquy that explains the pictures." Here he paused while the manager called for the cash-boy. "That's about the size of me. and my business. The book's right here fifty parts, fifty cents a part, plenty o' pictures and big type for the read ing, written by somebody or other and means 10 clear money to mo every time I work one ofl". Do you take or do I go?" By this tiino eleven copies of the first part were ordered, aud the "eleven able" resumed their work, while the office boy indites this tribute to a man who ain't ashamed of his little racket. Atlanta Constitution. Boy Shanghaied. A boy, by the name of Woods, whoso father drives an express wagon in this city, went' to Astoria a few days ago to visit friends, and while there he fell into the hands of sailor merchauts who prevailed on him to put his name to a certain document and then invited him to take a boat ride. He unwittingly got in and be fore long was lifted on board the ship Henry Yillard, which is lying at Sand Island waiting for the high tido on the 17th to go out, as she is drawing too much water to bo safe now in crossing the bar. The boy found himself shipped withoat any clothing except what he had on and $80 advance money paid ou; of his wages, if he is compelled to go with the ship. Standanl, 15. "IX A DEt'LIXI." Dr. R, V.
