Indiana's Remarkable Divorce Ia-ws
As illustrating some of the re
markable laws of Indiana on the
subject of divorce, the Indianapo
lis Sdnlinol says the Hon. Thad
deas P. Rollins relates a story of a
divorce which he procured in Cass
county some years since before
Judge Chase. The allegations in
the complaint were drunkenness
and general worthlessness of iho
defendant. When the case came
on a witness called to prove the
character and habits of defendant.
Mr. Rollins asked him the ques ques
teon: "Do you know Mr. , the
defendant in this case, Mr. Baird?"
The answer was in the affirmative.
At this point Judge Chase looked
up and said: "Mr. Baird, teil me
if that is the same Mr. who
was in company K of the In
diana regiment during the war?"
ttThe same man, judge," was the
answer. "You need go no fui ther,
Mr. Rollins,' said the judge, "the
divorce is granted," and judgment
was ontored accordingly for plain
tiff. After court adjourned the
judge was joked about the hasty
entry of the judgment, referring to
the fact that no evidence had been
introduced in the case "Why,
gentlemen," said his honor, "I
know tlmt fellow. He was in my
company during the war, and I
never will let a woman live with
him if she asks me for a divorce.
I know him better than any wit
ness that can be brought here.'
Governor Crittenden, of Mis
souri say's in his message to the
logisialurc that the state of
Missouri is full of medical quacks,
wlio are killing annually, through
tlsoir criminal ignorance, more
men, woman and children than die
from natural causes.
Mr. John Colohan and Ins wifo,
301 E. Fort-first street. New
York, were both cured, he of a, se
