The Karlh a Great 3Iagncl.
Th is the title of a lecture
roocitilr delivered by Professor
Siivr.ntts P. Thompson, at Glas
gow, under the auspices of the
Glasgow Science Lecture associa
tion. Professor Thompson traced
the history of magnetism from the
time of Dr. W. Gilbert, one of the
physicians of Queen Elizabeth, by
whom it was raised from the region
of superstition and fable to that of
true science, remarking that in
Gilbert's book he had found the
title of his address, "The Earth a
Groat Magnet." He showed by
experiment the properties of the
loadstone, of the magnet, of the
mariner's compass and pointed out
the various modes in which a
magnut might be formed. He
illustrated the declination of the
magnetic needle, and explained
the difference between the mag
netic and geographical poles. The
magnetic pole, lie stated was at
presont near Boothia Felix, more
thau a thousand miles to the west
of the geographical pole. In
1657 the position of the needle
skowed the magnetic pole to be
due lKM'tit. It had been
eastwnrd before that. It then
began to point westward,
and tiie westward variation in
creased till 1S1G, when the max
imiMM was attained. It had since
steadily diminished, and in 197G
it wowld again point to the due
north. The changes which had
beau observed, not only in the di
rection but in the strength of the
cartlrs magnetism, showed that
the same causes which originally
magnetised the earth were still at
work. Strangely enough these
c4mares did not occur at Ions in
tervnls in the course of centuries,
but were going on fiom day to
day, from week to week, and from
Year to year. This was illustrated
by those magne storms which
iTurru$tci tiPRiph operations,
rang telephones, and, as was re
ported lately, kept one of Edison's
lumps alight, though he would
liked to have seen it.
Those magnetip storms were the
most frequent in the month of
May and fewest in June, again
reaeJkisig ubeir maximum about
October. It had also been ob
ftarvod tltnt the more violent the
magnetic storms the more numer
ous wore the spots on the sun, and
the more brilliant were the auro
ral displays around tho poles.
The phenomenon of the aurora
were among the nn'sterics of sei
eaoa, of which no explanation
md been given; but it was
certain that the aurorora was
an electrical discharge passing
from hc equatorial i egions through
the upper air and descending at
the poles, where a condensation of
vapor was constantly taking plare.
The earth was thus constantly
surrounded by electrcity, and
here, he thought, was to be found
tike answer to the question, how
did tho earth become a magnet 'i
That it was not always a magnet
ho regarded as certain, seeing that
there were good geological
grounds for believing that it was
onoii a molten mass, and that
:irtimwg destroyed magnetism like
hoaC Faraday had found that by
taking a bar of iron, spinning it
on itsatxis, and carrying a current
of eloetrioitv round it from the cen
ter to the poles, a magnet was
formed. As, therefore, there was
a cuinmt of electricity continu
:' :i wHgj from the equatorial rc-gi'Mi-,
to the poles and returning
Hiram to the cqaator, he put for
a i a Afucss that in this way
the earth revolviag continually on
its axis had been converted into a
magnet. This theor', of course,
involved that the magnetism of the
earth had been growing, was grow
ing, and would continue to grow.
As Omaha dispatch of the 27th,

The secretary of state has, upon
application of the British govern
ment, sent a warraut for the ar
rest of P. A. Sheridan, suspected
of complicity in the Phoenix Park
murder, and it has been placed in
the hands of West, tho British
minister. Sheridan is supposed to
be in New York city. In case he
ii arrested he will be taken before
a United States commissioner,
who will decide whether he is sub
ject to extradition under the war
rant. Should he decide in the af
firmative, the department of state
will issue the necessary extradi
dition papers.
David Davis will resigti the
presidency of the senate at noon
next Saturday. It is thought
the Democratic senators will offer
no opposition to the prompt elec
tion of a Republican senator as
pro tomjwre president. Although
no caucus action has yet been
taken on the subject, the indica
tions are that Edmunds will bo
chosen as president pro tcm. Tho
other officers will hold the posi
tions until December.
