ASTOBIA, OREGON:
TUESDAY FEBRUARY 27, 18SS
ARobleLlfc.
Ix the domain of actual Hie we
know of no greater contrast than
is exhibited in the career of one of
the best of our American citizens,
one who has led a pure life, who
has always worked for the right,
who raised himself from the most
abject condition in which it is pos
sible for a human being be placed
to a mental and social equality
with the best in the land, and who
throughout a long and useful
life has alwajs been in the van of
progress. We are speaking of a
negro Frederick Douglass. He
was born and reared a slave,
and unfortunately for himself at
that stage of his career, the iron
entered his sensitive soul. He
was allowed no education, and the
little of the Bible's teachings that
he heard was in defense of a system
that made him a transferable chat
tel. He tried to escape and
was caught and punished.
A second attempt was suc
cessful. Then he worked and
educated himself. This is easy
onough to write about, but to do
.it required that quality which
mankind has always admired,
whatever the color of the skin.
Then he wrote and talked and
labored for freedom, and when
Abraham Lincoln freed the slaves
twenty vears ago, Fred Douglass
felt iiis work was done. He has
'lately written the history of his
life. It tolls a wonderful story.
Apart from that which it contains
and which the world knows by
heart as history there is a great
example set in the patient, perse
vering unwearying slave who rose
from the dunghill to a. seat with
the wisest of the nation. He is a
man deserving of honor and high
praise.

"In AH Tilings Charity."
Oin: friend who edits the Seattle
Herald objects to our recent
strictures on his statements, and
implies that we seek to belittle the
resources nd products of "Wash
ington Territory. Nothing can
be further front the ft. Tun
Astokian has always upheld the
magnificent country to the north
and never omitted to tsy a good
word for it, and describe its re
sources and attractions far more
than the Herald, which would as
sume the contrary. This is a fact
patent to all, and a statement in
which every newspaper man in
Oregon and "Washington Territory
will agree. The Herald talks
about "fraudulent statistics com
piled in newspaper offices." A
fault confessed is half atened: it
was just that very matter of
"fraudulent statistics" as pub
lished in the Herald, that we
objected to. We challenge the
Herald to find one incorrect state
ment relative to our sister terri
tory in the columns of The Asto
rian. What we objected to in
the Herald's article which it seeks
now to defend was an attempt to
belittle the commerce of the Co
lumbia by making false assertions
relative thereto? and by saying
that of the salmon canneries on
the Columbia, "two-thirds are on
the Washington Territory side."
We would always rather have a
pleasant word than otherwise for
those engaged in the same occu
pation at oun-elf, and in all kind
ness suggest to our Seattle friend
that he is mistaken.
Pixlev in his Argonaut has
got back to abusing the Irish
again. He has been saying all the
mean things he can think of about
JowSS&r-the last month but the
coming 17th of March has the
same effect upon Pick that a scar
lot shawl has upon a turkey gob
'bier. The fact that he announces
his intontion to observe the peni
tential season of Lent may be
taken as foreshadowing a change
of heart on the part of the San
iFranoisco editor.
Tis a good many 3'ears ago
since A. H. Stephens challenged
Senator Ben Hill of Georgia, to
fight a duel. Hill declined on the
ground that the conditions were
unequal. "I," said he to Stephens,
"have a soul to save, and a family
to care for; you have neither."
,Now, Ben Hill sleeps under six
feot of southern sod; Stephens is
governor of Georgia, and finds the
executive mansion too small for
his nine children.
Senator Hoar, of Massachu
setts, is satirical. Speaking of the
exhaustive eloquence of Senator
Book, of Kentucky, he says that
"Beck rests his mind while talk
ing.v But the Blue Grass Solon
comes back with the statement
that Hoar reminds him of that
sterile tract of ground in Virginia
which John Randolph said was
poor by nature and exhausted by
cultivation.

The S. F. Bulletin informs the
public that the new railroad so
long talked of from "Winnemucca,
Nev., "north to the Columbia river
at "Watla "Walla," is about to be

assertion is the fact tliat the Cen
