At 11:15 last Thursday night Fred
Swarz was shot and killed in tho barr
room of tho Palace variety theater in
Portland. A saloon keeper named
Frank Wheeler is under arrest. He
says that he was having some words
with a man he did not know, and they
came to blows. The stranger picked
up a chair and Wheeler drew his pis
tol, when tho other man struck his
hand and discharged the pistol, but it
glanced and the shot hit a man twenty
feet away, and then he fled. As he
was leaving the room two shots were
fired at him. He was locked up. He
was suspected from the first, and offi
cers James and Barry wero sent to
hunt him up, but could not find him
at his house. Wheeler heard that he
was wanted and gave himself up. He
said ho did not know that ho had
killed any one.

By the side of the coffin was a bundle

tho bone box were four baskets; in one
was a haunch of pork and a festoon of

When that much-raarned and illns

there was nothing new under tho sun
he was no doubt correct in his state
ment, but that was a long time ago.
New things are continually happening
in this day and generation, but the
most remarkable case of novelty lately
developed, transpired yesterday. As
previously reported the two seductive
females who appeared before Judge
Fox on tho charge of appropriating
John Welch's money were held in
200 bail to answor before tho next
term of circuit court. Tho bail bonds
were duly furnished and ono of the
parties signing tho same was tho said
John Welch. It is something un
heard of for a prosecuting witness to
furnish bail for a prisoner, and in ad
dition to tho many singular attributes
of tho situation the charm of novelly
is conspicuous. Bender, who turned
state's evidenco seems to be in the
worst fir of the lot. His companeros,
male and female have skipped lightly
to their lairs while he who "gave them
all away" still languishes in a dungeon
coll, being held in bonds to appear
and testify next August. Verily, it
is a sad wicked world, and ho who
lives the longest outlives the most.
