o' r4cctriily unci uuui, a few pa-

ists have boen silently exploring
the domain of science us applica
ble to cats. No hungry graspers
after hordid gain are they, but
modest burners of the midnight
oil. content to know, as the suffi
cient reward of all their toil, that
thev have conferred some benefit
on the human race. Brush, Edi
son. Field, Morse and such as
they, may leave behind them vast
accumulations of wealth, and the
noisy fame of material success, but
other scientific though nameless
heroes will be followed to their
long homos by the praj'ers and
grateful benisons of the world.
The efforts to which we allude
first orystalized some few y ears
ago, in the foundation, by a scien
tific Belgian gentleman, of an in
stitution for the education of cats,
on tfee currier-pigeon plan. His
followers Mid disciples began by
making Ikmiic pleasant for their
cats. Those luxurious beasts were
surrounded by every attention
that oare oould bestow. Their
days were brightened by tender
solicitude, their nights were made
ioft and warm beyond all prece
dent. After' having thus endeared
their homes to them, the next
move was to send the cats to the
scientific person's institute, where
they would be taught to miss and
sigh for tibe comforts they had left
behind. No more clotted cream;
no more down' couches, no warm
corirs by tilie hearth; nothing but
studied ill-treatment and gaunt
pewury at every turn. And then,
when the contrast had been em
phasized sufficient!' to convince
the moat improvident and unob
servant cat, the animal would be
Joose with a letter tied
round hie 11&& HU left to streak
it for houie. It wiil be soeu that
tbi ptftu wis truly ingenious,
mcse tike members of the society
were not otly not compelled to
pand money upon other peoples
cats haM for carrier purposes,
bat were in fact bound to treat
titeat in the shabbiest man
this
oonsideied plan fell
through. The domestic cat
proved a failure for postal
parfKMns. He would, when fir.-1
liberated, fly forth like some lurid
boojttemug into the turbid night,
Ins eyes aflami his tail distent, his
boiotn halving with homoMcknesh
and hanger: but from one cause or
aitotiter, he would tarry by the
wv. For as ho sailed high up
amoagvihe frightened stars he'd
hear from far below the Tabby's
plaintive call come welling tip
from the- woodshed's eaves, and
than, as that burning note did
smite trim through and through,
honor, home, responsibility, supper,
all would be forgotten. His mis
tress watching for him by the
slowly-fading fire, would vaguely
hoax .sbrill sounds of conflict, but
not until late next day would she
see Iter Moved Reginald, and then
only see htm weary, ragged, disre
putable, with blood-shot eyes and
faded mien, the missive at his neck
marked with claws and bristling
with strange hair.
Bufllod thus in the endeavor to
moralize the cat, and to de
vote Wnt to useful and indus
trial cuds science has since
oonv.'i-id means of circum
vei . 1 ! repelling him. A
:nftttg s:ovu in this direction
was the invention of the revolving
top-rail for back and division
fences. This consisted simply of
a small and slippc' rail, working
on well greased axles and running
alons the top of all yard fences.
As the visiting cat stepped gingerly
on this rail it did not move; but
when lulled into false security, and
lifting p his voice to call Maria,
be forgot his care, the treacherous
rail would turn, and he would fall,

This Avire may be stretched along
on fence tops, on woodsheds, etc.,
and connected with powerfully
charged batteries concealed in the
room of the operator. When the
cats become thick and the chorus
dreadful, the current may be
turned on and the animals par
alyzed. The policeman is then
called in and the cats dispatched
by means of a clnb. It is in a
measure reassuring that science is
actively at work to repel the visit
ing and unwelcome cat, that the
back fences may cease to be
the vehicles cf dissipation, and
the woodsheds may cease to
blush.
