The Walla AYalla Democrat says
the sturgeon abounding in Tacouver

schools during the winter season in
spots called sturgeon wallows, that 15,
in shallow places in the lake. Taking

The Dredge Business.
Thero was pome talk yesterday that
threats had been mado to blow up the

Youn" America was forced on the i
Hands at PostofQco bar Friday by rea
son of ona of tho dredgers being 111
the channel, and the oflicor making
some remark about thc ,:b!aetcd
thing." The city dredgt, now having
cost about $30,000, is a. matter of
muck) concent and inquiry as to what
is being done with it. A gentleman
from bolow said that it is ashore on
the east bank of the river, having been
beached by tho wind in spite of a tug
that was trying to keep it in deep
water.
Tho water at Swan Island is so shal
low that the Young America could
not get over the bar, and i now an
chored at St. JohnV. If the dredgers
are doing nothing but blocking up the
channels, it cannot be expected that
strange ships coming into port will re
gard them as ornaments, but on the
contrary will consider them obstruc
tions aud resort to blasting. There is
a case bearing somen hat on this point,
that shows how a person not informed
is liablo to bo mistaken. Commodore
Schuleuberg, of Stillwater, Minnesota,
with a fleet of ten tow boats, pulled
up the main span of the West Wis
consin railroad bridge, which was set
in the channel of Lake St. Croix,
thinking it was an obstruction, and
had removed about 2,000 piles before
he discovered his mistake, and then
tho matter got into tho courts, where
it was decided that no one had a right
to obstruct a channel commonly used
by ve33els. So if the city dredge is
not going to dig out tho bars it ought
to have placards stuck on it "This is
a dredge, look out for it," as long as
it remains in the wav. Standard.
