ASTORIA. OREGON:
"WEDNESDAY ..r'EIJKUAKY 21, 1KW3
Dii'lic Discoveries.
Impecunious mn are under ob
ligation:, to Dr. Tjinner, J lie crle
brted MurvaiimiiM. His famous
expcr'nii-tix siiowi d "hat fitting- is
a .mere popular folly and delusion.
We eat, simply because it has be
come a habit to do so; not from
ativ absolute need for it. Dinner
and dyspepsia, are, Jie proved, rel
ics of barbarism, handed down to
. us.from our ancestors, and the com
ing race will altogether abolish
this silly habit, which consumes so
much time and money, simply to
produce dyspepsia and other dis
orders, troubles and diseases. Dr.
Tanner's brilliant discovery opened
a bright prospect for the under
paid emplo"e, and at the same
time carried terror into the bo
soms of butcher.- and bakers, who
.aw ruin staring them ir the face.
For. a time, such was the effect of
his experiments, the amount of
food consumed daily in this coun
try materially decreased. If this
spurt of economy and starvation
that he inaugurated lias Jaterly died
away, if we have all gone back to
the vile practice of eating, it is not
Dr. Tanner's fault he who sacri
5ced his health and teeth for our
happiness but our own weakness.
Of late Dr. Tanner has been
making further experiments into
the subject of the human stomach
and the food adapted to it. that
promise to solve many vexed
problems, and prove a blessing in
deed to us. As the celebrated
Darwin sacrificed his son in the
interests of science, so was Tan
ner prepared, with wonderful
unselfishness, to surrender his
wife. Darwin tells us in his "His
tory of a Baby," the result of va
rious experiments made by him
upon his son. Desirous of dis
covering the" birth of human intel
tect, the soul, and all our feelings,
he submitted the infantile Darwin
to all maimer of tricks and out-,
.rages stuck pins in him to find
out when babies first experienced
pain, jumped at him from behimd
doors to see whether he was
frightened, left him in the dark to
terrify him, and punched him in
order to discover whether he ap
preciated his naughtiness. The
poor little infant was punched and
pulled and cuffed that hit, father
might have material supplied for :
book. The feelings of the un
fortunate infant were not (ion
suited. J n similar manner Mre. Tanner
was starved, fed or gorged to test
and prove certain theories of her
husband. Dr. Tanner holds that
our dispositions are the lesult- of
our food; that the ferocious nature
of the Hun was due to his diet of
curds and bloed: that the German
is phlegmatic from beer, and the
English heavy from beef. To dis
cever, therefore, the pioperties
and effects of various foods on the
disposition, he fed Airs. Tanner
exclusively on certain diets. The
result was a perfect success. He
found that turnips produced ex
treme amiability ; that carrots made
people timid and sullen, and beans
developed great irritability of
temper. Like Dr. Guillotine, he
was the victim of his own discov
ery. He unfortunately gave his
wife too largely of beans, and the
result was that, she left her bed and
board, and began a suit for di
vorce. This unfortunate termina
tion to a course manifestly in the
interests has the effect of deterrinjr
others from following in his foot
steps, though the result would
seem to sustain the theory he was
anxious to substantiate.
Most distressing accounts of
suffering and hqjnelessness come
from the Ohio vallev. Thousands
of families have lost everything,
and are destitute. A relief com
mittee has been prganized, and its
appeal is meeting -with prompt
and generous 1 espouse. It is now
feared that the levees on the lower
Mississippi will give way, in which
case appalling ruin will bo the
inevitable result.
In Fear and Trembllmr.
A Washington dispatch says
that developments for the. past
few days have terrified the star
routers. Amonr the latest ru-
-.; ., . u n 1 n
mors is one that ISnulvtud Dorsev '
. i T .. " '
are makinir preparations to get
away from Washington. Warning J
has been given the em'ernmeut
counsel that another effort will be
made to fix some of the jury, as;
the defendants have come to the
conclusion that this is their only
hope of salvatiifi. Ex-detectivrs

hover about the city all day an
hold intercourse with a number of
suspicious characters therein. Tur
ner is subjected to surveillance
and every movement is strictly
chronicled and faithfully reported
by agents of the government to
the proper authorities. It has also
been ascertained that Brady
has converted all his poj--
ertv into cash. The last trans-
action netted him about
$120,-
000, which he
for use in caso
has put aside
an emergency I
should arise. All movements of
.i.- :-:! t r. ...:n k
carefully looked after, and it is
doubtful if they can get away un
disturbed. The government coun
sel say Reredell's evidence will
convict all the other star route de
fendants. Keredell says he tells
the truth for the truth's sake and
his family's sake. Counsel for the
defendants say Reredell, who is a
boneless individual, is insignificant
physically, mentallj', and morally,
and that he "squealed" under pres
sure in order to save himself from
a possible conviction. They think
his testimony not so strong as lite
government takes it to be. To
night, however, all the defendants,
except Reredell and Vail, met at
Ingersoll's residence aud gravely
discussed the situation. They
would not say what their plans
were. Dorsey was present. He
says he will neither turn state's
evidence nor run away, as re
ported. Under date of the 19th it is tel
egraphed from London, that th
rains and floods which have been
prevailing in all parts of the coun
try have assumed the proportions j
of a national calamity. Large
tracts of land are totally sub
merged. A considerable area of
this bhould have been sown, but
scarcely an acre has yet been
setsded down. All England is lit
erally a, morass of water, and wheat
is rotting in soggy ground. What
ever may happen now there can
not be a good harvest this year,
even if does not turn out one of
the worst that England has iver
known. To add to the misfortune
of the agricultural population, a
disease has broken out aruonjr cat
tle and sheep.
Congress has but ten days more
to sit. The session is chiefly re
markable for what has not been
dene. Acting Vice-President Da
vis gives notice of his intention to
vacate the chair and give the Re
publicans au opportunity to elect
a president of the senate before
final adjournment on the 4th prox.
In reference to the shipment of
lumber from this coast to Europe,
San Francisco advices are to the
effpet that the business will be an
at.jrcd success. It is thought
that the supply will create a de
mand, which will in turn call for
increased supply.

In the Dublin murder trial an j
lnlormer named Carey, who has
turned state's evidence is telling
what he knows of the murder of
Cavendish and Burke. His evi
dence directly criminates several
of the twenty-one prisoners ar

claims any connection with the
scheme.
Mes- Langtey will exhibit her
self on this coast in ApriJ, about
the time the other fish begin to

The convenient "tramp" theory
is now advanced to account for
the Newhall disaster at Milwau

It has been conceded by eminent scientists

which are the result of the poisoning of the
