Fire, Fir, Fire.
Ed. Astop.le:
Something that every per.on should
understand, and that is to sound a fire
alarm and sound it correctly. Every
citizen, whether an active fireman or
not, should know how to givo tho
alarm with the large bell. First,
should tho fire bo in the 1st ward, the
party giving tho alarm, should in all
cases, sound the ward first by giving
one loud distinct tap, locating the fire
in the first ward, then follow with
the tapping in quick succession. It is
always practicable to strike the ward
two or three different times at inter
vals when giving an alarm. You will
understand by the nbovo it will re
quire two distinct taps for tho second
ward, which ward commences at the
Seaside bakerv. East of thi3 point b
second ward, aud west of it is the
first ward.

years just past has paid seventy-six

Sunday morning the wind veered
to the west and great masses of clouds
floatod up from tho ocean. About
dark tho welcome rain began to fall
and continued during the night. Yes
terday morning tho obliging clerk of
the weather sent a small consignment
of snow in largo flakes, assorted, and
after that had fallen for two hours the
rain began again.
Values for salmon aro at tho close
entirely nominal. Ono salo for East

week at $L30, closing out the pack of
a Columbia river cannery. No more
can be had at that figure, and those
having orders to fill claim it difficult
to secure fish at 1.37i per dozen.
Whatever is being done for

quiet manner that it is difficult to

that considurablo Columbia river fish

Sacramento river fish have been se

The Walla Walla papers indig
nantly discuss the fact that an indi
vidual afflicted with the small-pox was
allowed to leave Portland and carry
that virulent disease to their city.
We refer to the matter for one reason
only Astoria has no pest-house.
Fortunately there is no present need
for one, but there may be. It is a
necessary institution, how necessary
our citizens once came near realizing.
Should that dreadful scourge visit our
little city tho neeed of auch a place
would be manifest. A suitablo loca

side of the hill, and a building oould
Tho Skipanon Road.
Articles of incorporation have bean
filed under the namo and title of the
Clatsop Road Company. Th inten
tion is to build and operate a toll
road from Smith's Point to Skipanon
Landing. The capital stock of the
company is $25,000, divided into five
hundred shares of fifty dollars each,
which will givo our citizens an oppor
tunity to subscribe the whole amount
necessary to build the road. We
have already commented upon the
necessity of tho road, the desirability
of its construction in a financial point
of view, and the advantages that would
result from its completion. Subscrip
tion books are open at F. J. Taylor's
office for the convenience of those
wishing to subscribe.
Drowned.
About seven o'clock Sunday even
ing John Junge fell off the roadway
this uido of Ike Forter's, and was
drowned. There was not over four feet
of water there at the time, but when
picked up life was extinct. Deceased
was a single man about 38 years of
age,and was employed painting Lcinen
weber's new boat. Coroner Franklin
will hold an inquest to-day; tho fu
neral will take place from his rooms at
2 o'clock to-morrow afternoon.
Yesterday B. A. Bailey, charged
with selling liquor to Indians, was dis
charged in tho United States court on
tho ground that the Indians to whom
the liquor was furnished belonged to
the Tillamook tribe. As this tribe
has nevor made a treaty with the
United States government the court
had no jurisdiction in the matter. In
conversation with the officers of the
court an Orcgonian reporter learned
some interesting facts in regard to this
tribe, once a powerful one, but now
under the combined influences of en
croaching civilization and whiskey re
duced to about ten individual;. In
1853 the tribe comprised several vil
ages, and during that year a war party
crossed over the mountaius into Yam
hill county and killed the family of
one Clarke, a preacher, and burned
his house. Captain Lamson, then a
boy, spread the alarm and a company
of twenty-nine men and boys was
speedily raised and started in pursuit.
They tracked the murdering band
across tho mountains to their native
haunts, and capturing the guards sta
tioned to prevent such an occurrence,
surprised the village to which tho war
party belonged. The chief, Kilches,
finding that there was no escape,
agreed to deliver up tho murderers,
and accordingly picked out two men,
probably the most cultus of the tribe,
and turned them over to the little
army for occupation, They wore at
once hanged, and formal notice was
given that in futuro any member of
the Till mcok tribe from outside of
their territory would be. alio t without
judge or jury or benefit ef clergy.
The warning was remembered and for
many years nary a Tillamook crossed
the hills to the white settlements.
Ere many years have passed the Tilla-
mooks will add another to the list of
Indian tribes which have faded away
before the encroaching whito man,
and the only reminder that they ever
existed will be tho name borne by the
county, bay aud headlands where once
they hunted and fished. Oregoman.
