A MANY-SIDED MAN.
W. H. Gilder, the Herald cor-'
respondent, who crossed Siberia to
carry the news of the burning of
the Rogers, arrived in New York '
on Wednesday ol last week. He
doesn't look, says a correspondent
of the Philadelphia Record, as
though he had undergone some of
the severest hardships that ever
befell a man. He says, how-!
over that he is not very well that
the horse he ate on the jour-j
nrv had not been well fen, and
didn't agree with him. To us who
sat yesterday and day before
around roaring fires, it seems im-1
possible that a man could live it:
such a climate as he has been in
for the past year. But even that
was nt as bad as the year he was
with Schwatka on the other side.
Tt is not a little singular that Mr.
Gilder, when at home, is the most
luxurious of men in his way of
living. He is so particular about
his food that, no matter how hun
gry he might bo, he would rather
wait an hour to have it prepared
in a certain way than to t-it down .
and eat it prepared carelessly. He J
won't drink a cup of coffee unless
the bean has been roasted and
ground since he ordered-it; he
will go into the kitchen cf a res
taurant and give the chef exact
orders how to grill a kidnpy or
fry a dish of whitebait. He would
rather go without the whitebait!
than eat it if one of the tiny fish
happen to get broken. I have
known him to have been an hour
makinsr a salad dressing. Yet he
can rough it as no man I ever met.
When he was in King William's
land with Schwatka and during
this last journey he lived on blub
ber and frozen seal. 1 heard him
say to-day that the nearest he ever
came to appoplexy from too high
living was on Wrangel land. They J
had a good Italian cook on the
Rogers, and plover were to be had j
for the shooting, so the' lived as
well as they could have in Paris
or New York. The plover were
the size of pigeons, and as fat as
though they had known the Rog
gcrs was coming and preprepared
for the slaughter. But after the
Rogers was burned all the stores
were lost, and on the journey
across Siberia the larc was pretty
'bad and, what was worse to a fas
tidious man, it was not clean, but
it was eat that or starve. The
frozen seal was piled up in a cor
ner of the hut and was sat upon
and slept upon by the entire family.
When thev were hunirrv thev
broke a piece off and ate it. Mr.
Gilder says that the fat was very
warming, and the fur was not bad
when it was frozen hard, but when
it rose up and tickled the throat it
was anything but pleasant. I
asked him if he did not suffer a
great deal from these privations,
and he said that the hardships
themselves were not so bad, that
it was the mental worry that told
on him. The native he had as a.
guide was a bad fellow, and was '
constantly trying to desert him.
in which case he would have per
ished in the wilderness. It was
nececessary to watch the man night
and day, and Mr. Gilder slept so
HMitlv (so as to hear the rascal if
he moved in the night) that when
he got up-the next morning he was
far from being refreshed. -And yet
Mr. Gilder wants more of this
life, and would ro back to-morrow
if thc-ro was an expedition going
out.
Mr. Julius Hoffstadt, Madison,
Ind., bears hearty testimony to tin
wonderful cure by St, Jacobs Oil,
of his wife, who suffered terribly
with rheumatism. Permanent re
lief followed its use.
How Mark Twain Wrote "Inno-! the garbage man have a flirtation

money. I am rather hardened jof the CarSon The Indians there
now, but 1 remember it shoi-keu
me at the time. The little drum
stove was full of ashes running
over on the zinc sheet, which was
covered all over; the bed seemed
to be unmade for a week. The
room was sour with tobaccfsmoke,
the floor, dirty cnougn to begin
with, was littered with newspapers
from which Twain had cut his
letters. Then there were hun
dreds of pieces of torn manuscripts
which had been written and then
rejected by the author. A dozen
pipes were about the apartment
on the wash stand, n the mantel,
on the wilting table, on the chairs
everywhere that room could be
found. And there was tobacco,
and toLacco everywhere. One
thing there were no flics The
smoke killed them, and I am now
surprised the smoke did noL kill
mf, too. Twain would not let a
servant come into his room. He
would strip dotvn his suspenders
(his coat and vest, of course, being
off) aud walk back and forward in
slippers in his little room and
avvi'tll ituu ciuurw un "'"' .j
long. Of course, at times he
would work, aud when he did
work it was like a steam engine
at full head. 1 do believe that if
Clemens had not been under con
tract to write for the Hartford
firm his "Innocents Abroad," ho
never would have done it. Of
course, at that time, Townscnd,
Stillson, Riley and myself never
thought Twain's book wGuld
amount to anything, and probably
he did not think it would either,
but he was writing for the money
his naked manuscript would bring
from his Uartford publishers. He
needed that money and so he
wrote. He is glad ha did write
now, for that "Innocent's Abroad,"
written in that little back room on
Indiana avenue, in Washington,
has been the making of the fame
and fortuife of Mark Twain.
Whether he smokes the same old
pipes: whether he wears the same
soiled undershirts; whether he
heats his room with the old, un-
cleaned stoves; whether he swears
at his or other people's servants;
whether he mopes, and snarls and j
whines well, I don't care. He is
rich and aristocrtic. He has
edited a paper in Buffalo and an-
other in Hartford. He failed' in
both. Editing is not his forte. J
Humor is his forte, but you will
excuse me if 1 say that coarse
humor should be nobody's forte?
Chum.
