c "?- Vlu Dailn slca'Arm. n'KiA.tk"-ov FRIDAY r'tltirtJAJU J, l"3.pu,rHt .V; to answer limv il is The LimhI m Exhibition. The IuternatiMii.tl Fit-h Exhibi tion, .to bo held in London next May "is attracting the universal at tuntion of all interested in the in dustry of fishing. In the circular which Prof. Baird has tent to all the canneries and fish e?tablish- . merits in the United States, he .says: The fisheries of the United States surpass in extent and value those of any other country in the world, 'and it is our hope that the Ameri can display will, in its competition with the exhibits of other coun tries, fully sustain this fact. Our preparations for illustrating the methods employed in our fish- eries are well under way, and very little remains to be done. We are, however, particularly anxious to make a full exhibit of the products of the fisheries, and for this pur pose we solicit the co-operation of every establishment engaged in canuing, or otherwise preparing, such products. The exportation of American canned fish to England is constantly increasing, and in 18B1 amounted in value to nearly two millions of dollar?, the total exports of fishery products from the United States closely approxi mating six millions of dollars. By a retios-pectivc view of the beneficial results to commercial enterprise due to the agency of past international expositions, we have- every reason to believe that the European demand for Ameri can fish may, by an effective dis play at the exhibition in question, be immensely increased in the fu ture. We shall be glad to have your listablii-hmcnt well repiesentcd in London, and will transport without expense to you such exhibits of every brand of canned, or other wise prepared, fish, . you may feel disposed to prepare. For purposes of exhibition, dummies are preferable to filled cans. Of the former, we should like to have one dozen cans of each brand; and of the latter, the same quantity; in order that the merits of the contents may bo tested by the juries appointed for that purpose. The tJ. S. Government will pay freight on these goods from your packing establishment to London, exhibit them in London, attend to the printing of the catalogues, and, if desired, dittributc at the exhibition any printed information relating to the business of your house. On Puget Sound and Frazer river the utmost interest is man ifested, the cannery men lightly deeming it a good opportunity to i. advertise their wares. Our Co ...lumbia canners will makf- their usual superior display, and will doubtless carry off whatever hon ors may bo awarded for excellence in quality of salmon exhibited. A bill providing for the count ing of ballots h now before the California lemslature. 0:i" of the clauses i to tho effect that i 1 ballots f-hali te burned as S'k:i ;is counted. The Jiullcl7?t, in com ment thereon, is of the opinion that ! under such :i law 'ffeiitlo-inanK- inspectors with a piece of graphite undnr thn fingor nail, with which tf 'scratch' names a, the ballots were bping counted, would command a higher price in San Francisco than formerly." Till Walla Walla Union speaks of Gen. Hancock as the "last" Democratic candidate for presi dent. Does the Onion insinuate 'that there will be no Democratic candidate for the presidency next year? Tue Dalles 2'imes-Mountaineer is correct in saying that the only - way to expect full congressional - aid for the Columbia river is to give it the preference over ady po litical affiliation. Timlior Claims. A CITIZEN of I hi Skngit, pvi- diM.ib-ipiioMi.Itothoni.eratu.il of the timiHT claim net, desiiivs tuc J that a trirt of land having a heavy growth of merchantable timber but wlrieh makes good agricultural land when cleared, can be taken i un under the timber act. Plain enough. The land is chiefly valu- able for timber. In the first place, i the government gets $2.50 per acre under the timber act, instead of $1.23 under the pre oraption or homestead art; and again it will cost from 8100 to $300 per aero to clear the laud so as to render it fit for cultivation, by which opera- tiou tRe timber is destroyed or! . ., r ,.: .i ,i.J wiuicu, iur u i;miiii.nii. uwut mv, pre-emption or homestead laws is not allowed to log the claim until he acquires title thereto, thus renderinir it difficult for the claim- ant to cultivate and reside upon, aud derive a living therefrom. Most of this land will doubtless make fair pasture land when the timber is logged off, by burning the brush and sowing grass-seed broadcast thereon, and can be purchased by the settler for this purpose after the logger is through with it for $1.23 or less an acre. Thus the timber is saved and utilized without imoAiriuir thc value of the land for. agricultural i purposes. Ir '-protection' is so good thimr. so sreat a blessing as its adherents claim, what a pity that free trade should be allowed be tween Oregon and California, be tween New York and Connecticut and between Louisiana and Illi nois. There should be a row of custom houses along every state line. That would increase our protective facilities to a still great er degree than the present system. The idea needs elaboration. .NEW TU-DAY Boat Lost. A BOAT TICKED UP LAST SATURDAY. oviier ran have the tame by pajuij; charges and proving property. Inquire at Central Hotel.
