O) 3?Jxt ShtiVa slartetu ASTORIA. OR EOON: SUNDAY. PEBKUAKY 4, 18-3 "Flarel's Monopoly." In an article on "port dues" in yesterday's Norlhirtbt A'cics is an allusion to "the Flavel monopoly" which calls for a little comment. Capt. Flavel has just the same "monopoly" that any business man has. Time was when he got a state subsidy when without that subsidy he could not have run his business. That subsidy ceased Vhen the increasing commerce of the Columbia made towage a self sustaining industry. His tugs have always been kept in good service and well manned. Any one desirous of engaging in the business of towing on the bar has precisely the same opportunities no more, no less. "When Port land capitalists concluded that the business would pay, they bought . a tug and put her to work. Should any other parties decide to apply some of their surplus capital in the same line of busi ness, there is nothing to prevent them from embarking in the en terprise. Whatever "monopoly" Capt. Flavel has, arises from a thorough knowledge of his business and ample facilities for keeping his tugs in trim. We believ the JNeics would not knowingly make indefensible statements, and in the kindliest spirit suggest to our enterprising contemporary, that in asserting the possession ol a monopoly in this instance, it is mistaken. About a month ago we wrote an item about a strawberry plant in fullest leaf etc., that one of our subscribers brought into the office. It throve well, and we ate two finely flavored berries off it; why we allude to it now is tins. The statement has appeared in many of the principal papers throughout the United States; and with a northeast wind howling in the trees, and the thermometer away down we fear some of our Missis sippi Valley friends may get a wrong impression of Astoria. True, strawberries grow here in December, but that doesn't pre vent their being nipped by a Jan uary Nor'easter. In the 4Sth Congress, which meets next December, there -will be 401 mewbers, the largest in the history of the country. Of the senate' seventy-six members there will be thirty-nine Republicans and thirty-seven Demecrats: of the 325 members of the house there will be 111) Republicans, 191 Democrats, and thirteen --pinto." Years ago a Dakota herd of cattle was destroyed by a prairie fire and as the twelve-year-old boy in charge was missing it was feared he had met the same fate. Last week he appeared, a grown man, and explained that fearing to re turn he had stayed away till he earned enough to leplace the cattle, in which he was successful PisrtHArs nothing better illus trates the vague ideas of foreign. er3 towards this country than thj recent question of the lead ing primate of England, the Arch bishop of Canterbury, directed to! an American visitor, wherein he asked for an oxplanation of -'-the attitudo of the United States as to dissenters.' Refekkixg to the statement regarding the alleged -combination of Portland hotel men in relation to the Oregonian that paper says it does not publish the hotel lists because it objects to doin"- so without proper compensation, and that is probably the true state of the case. The stone that Oregon will send as a tribute to the Wash ington monument is at a Josephine count- quarry, and after being suitably dressed, carved and engraved, will be sent to the aational capital about April 1st. Tite 47th Congress has but four weeks more hi life: what it has done in this last session can best be represented by a negative j quantity. Reduced letter postage is now an assured fact The only ques-1 tion is when it will go into effect probably about July 1st. To "pass awav irently while preaching" is Preacher Barnes' i idea of a happy death. I An offer of marriage to a Mich- j igan girl occasioned a fatal attack of heart disease.
