Power of the Waves.
Tin tremendous power of sen
vvuvos whs illustrated at Wick, on
the. extreme not thorn coast of
Sioilaiid, Avliere a. breakwater was
being built. It may give an idea
of what wave power really can do.
It was found that stones of ten
tons weight were as pebbles to the
waves, which have been measured
and found to be fifty-two feet
from crest to the bottom of the
wottgh. The outer end of the
ferttftk-wftter, where the storms beat
wtoat viniettUy, was built of
tftwee courses of one hundred
tui stones, laid on the rub
bte foundfttion; next above
ibee were three courses of large
fat stones, and upon these a mass
of concrete built on the spot of
wment and rubble. The end of
tlhe fcroakwuter was thought to be
s immovable as the natural rock.
ytft the resident engineer faw it
viioM to the force of the waves
ad swing- around into the (rouMed
water iiimde the ier. It gave way
not i fragments, but in one m:is,
as if it were a monolith. The dis
pfaoftd mare is estimated to weigh
attaint 1.850 too.
