The outgoing steamer carries

The Poitlund papers are quoting
the following, though we don't seethe
reason why:

Sacramento) is growing in favor, and

fish is of the very bait, and our Sacra

salmon is all right, and hurts nobody,

memory, that no matter how much
'pains,'' Sacramento canners take,
they can never successfully compete
with our Astoria cannerymen. for this
reason the Columbia salmon is in
finitely superior to that caught in
California rivers, and all foreign
purchasers know it.

out at 2:15 through the new south
channel which was carefully sounded
yesterday by Pilot Graham, on the
Rrenham.
The innonvenioncc occasioned by
the recent bursting of the uater
pipes still continues to a certain ex
tent; the proprietors are doing all pos
sible to get the mains in good running
order again.
Jas. Kiernan, of the Portland
fire department, recoived fifty dollars
from Corbitt, Failing & Co. , for services
at the late fire. He is the man to
whom the citizens of this place gave a
hundred dollar gold watch last Jury
for rescuing the son ot Pilot Howes,
who had fallen off the sidewalk oppo
site our office, while the fireman's
tournament waB in progress.
