Last Saturday afternoon the
regular express train loft. Los An
geles, Gal., for San Francisco. It
reached the pass at Tehachep.ii,
Sunday morning, and while the
cars -were Jeft standing on the
steep grade at that place, to allow
an extra engine to pass, the force
of gravity began to draw the cars
back. Every moment the speed
increased, till when the doomed
train was whirling down the grade
at a speed of sixty miles an hour,
five cars jumped the track, and
then ensued a sickening crashing
of glass and wood and iron and
human flesh. The cars caught
fire and sme only escaped a fatal
crushing to be burned to cinders.
Twenty persons were killed and
burfied to death. The terrible ac
cMjent was caused by carelessness
on the part of the railroad em
ploycs.
Last Sunda afternoon, atBerke
ley, Alnmeda Co., California, there
was an explosion at the Giant
Powder "Works, which blew the
buildings to pieces and killed
forty-three laborers, forty of whom
were Chinese.
The steamer Cimbria left Ham
burg last Thursday with 490 souls.
uud the following morning was run
into by the English steamer Sul
tan in the North Sea. The un
fortunate vessel w.vs struck amid
ships and sank in fifteen minutes.
But fifty-six have been reported
saved, and it is feared that four
hundred of the ill fated passengers
and crew were drowned.
